Autofocus Micro Adjustment

Hi gang, I am having a bit of trouble adjusting the autofocus of my Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 EX HSM. Should I remove the UV Filter when testing the autofocus? Is it possible to set the autofocus adjustment for the wide angle focal length and the telephoto focal length or do I have to compromise? Thanks in advance. Dino.

Yeah, you can just throw the filter out an open window.

Just joking, Dino.

The camera will only allow one adjustment per lens, so you'd have to pick the focal length.

If you get the Sigma USB dock ($70???) from CR Kennedy (the Aussie Sigma importers) it will let you do several focal lengths.

Does the dock work on that lens? Just asking, I'm not that familiar with Sigma glass but I thought the dock only worked on the newer models.

For AF fine adjustment there is only one adjustment per lens so either pick something in the middle, pick the focal length you use the most or test several focal lengths and then use a best average.

Ooh, you're right, Jatrax, it only works with the Art, Contemporary and Sports lines of lenses - the 17-50 isn't one of them! :-(

Best way to tune up Sigma zoom is to give it with camera body to service centre- they will probably set it in lab to all marked focal lengts you have marked on the barrel

If UV filters make AF inaccuracy then what is the point of using it?

Well, I'm not a fan of them, but is that known to be a fact, Zan?

No. I have tested AF accuracy with and without UV filter and found that there is no difference.

I use Hoya HD filters.

Thanks

Thanks for the great suggestions. I would love to throw my UV filter out the window. Actually I've been shooting without one more and more these days. As far as sending the lens and camera to a service centre to be calibrated, would that be a Sigma Centre or Pentax centre? And are there any in Australia? Cheers to all.
