Looks like I'm in the same boat as you are: trying to choose a flash.

Reading the opinions posted in different forums, there are quite a lot of people that say the 540 is quite up to snuff. Thinking about going with the Sunpak 383 too. But I'm worried about how long they'll last. The Sigma 530 might be a better option.

The Sunpak 383 is a nice little flash. Durable too. I have been using one for about 5 years, first on a Panasonic DMC-FZ20 and later on my K10D. As has been noted above, it can only be used in automatic or manual mode. It is not a P-TTL flash which means you will have to work at it. It is a lot more powerful than the built in flash however. I recently upgraded to the Sigma 530 Super which is P-TTL compatible with the K10D and a real pleasure to use. It is to the Sunpak 383 as the Sunpak was to the built in flash.
