The chrome button on the K10D was originally included to correct an issue with poor grounding and excess static in the early bodies. This was corrected in later versions of that body (v1.85ff) and the button switched to black in the K20D to reflect the improved design.

I was able to determine that my K10D could support the black button and sent the body to Pentax to be updated. Their initial response was that the modification was ill-advised and unnecessary. However, when I provided body version documentation and references to the benefits of black buttons (corrects back focus and underexposure issues), they relented. The mod cost me a bundle, but I have not regretted doing it for a second!

I used a permanent marker (Sharpie brand) to blacken my button and it now takes 18.25MP images...

Obviously, chrome. That way it does some extra stuff other than auto meter, like autofocus on the desired spot, auto-lens change or live view. Your choice.
