If I was one of your grandkids I would want it, actually I wouldn't I prefer Pentax

Plus I am a young person, not even owning a smartphone...

11?! wow, congrats on the grandkids! However, you never know, they may want a DSLR! My kids have iPhones (mainly used as 'iPod' style without phone service, except when going to camps etc.) But my son and daughter are fighting over what I do with my K10D, now that I have my K3. I'll have to start teaching them soon how to utilize the dSLR settings, and once I get a new 18-55 replacement, they can have the K10D and old lenses.

I'm 14 and bought my own DSLR at 13 and I loved it...
Made my own decision spent about 6 months researching models and brands etc...
Eventually got it and loved it!

I envy you. At your age, I was really interested in getting into serious photography, but I did not because the cost was still so prohibitive with both high gear costs and the added expense of film development, etc. I think it's great that the up-front investment is now in reach of kids your age and you can take as many photos as you want to take without any significant additional expense.

It wasn't until I was an adult that I was able to really start purchasing the gear I wanted, and more importantly, take lots of photos with it.

I started at 6 and ended up with an SLR by 12 - but tended to have 1 or 2 lenses at the most for most of my teen years. It is a great thing to have options but stick to learning the basics well and you will be a better photographer in the end. I have forgotten more than I realize I suspect! Good luck and keep to it.

That's a chunk o' change to spend at that age. I paid around $750 for my K50 with the 18-135 kit and it broke my toy budget at the time.

Congrats on picking a fine combo. I got the K100D Super with the 18-55/50-200 combo used a long time ago and loved it. The two lenses are light and capable and give you a great deal of range for not too much weight to carry.

Mind you that is $600 Canadian, about $450 US today.
I had to convince my parents to let me buy it
I hope I win this so I can upgrade my kit...

I fully agree, there's a bottleneck , that is not the camera but the display media often limited to 8bits depth and less than 4K (large prints excluded). The make a really nice photobook, an APSC camera is plenty, noone will see the difference with FF. For large prints, sport photos, the situation is different, sport is more demanding, even a FF without a fast lens will reach its limit.
For large prints, this depend a lot to me on MP... So we are really speaking today of D800 familly, 5DS familly or A7R familly. Only theses FF get a significant edge. D600/D700/D750Df/D3S/D4S/A7/A7s/5D/6D/1D all of theses cameras are 24MP or less. But even if you take say a D810 with 36MP, that mean that you can print 24" wide instead of 20" and keep 300dpi. Only with a 5DS would you allow you a 28" print with 300dpi. If you are thinking something 30x40 or 60x40 you need a large format film scan or to stich or an hasselblad with it "pixel shift" like technology at 200MP.

For sports, a D7200 with proper Nikon lens get you quite far. Sure an FF + the proper very large apperture lens does better but that's 5000-10000$ price range for the body+lens or either limited to the reach of a 70-200 f/2.8 on FF.with a more affordable price of 3000-4000$ for an entry level FF the 70-200 lens. And of course if you are not an acredited pro shooting officially, you'll be prevented to bring any capable camera anyway. They let you bring your iphone or a Q though. Or an A6000 + collapsible kit lens. Some managed to pass a K30 + DA15...

For wildlife/birding, the issue is the same, even worse in fact because you are more after quite some reach, 400-500mm FF equivalent being the bare minimum and 800mm is really a plus. And that thing are affordable only in APSC.

The bread and butter of the FF camera seems to be more weddings to me and people that feel they need the best gear.

I'm a Dad and I gave my entire Olympus system to my son when I made the shift. If he didn't like it I would have sold it. As a father, I would like to nurture skills of my kids. I mean good skills and photography is one good skill. I believe if I can afford it and my child is serious and won't waste it. I'll give it. Good luck and enjoy photography.
