ExifTool by Phil Harvey

RH is right, there are packages for linux, windows and OSX, so everyone should drop to their shells and get this done, like now

Trying this with the Terminal app in OS X, but I get no match -- obviously, I don't have my UNIX syntax right. Any pointers?

I thought this might work:
Code:
exiftool -Make="PENTAX Corporation" *.pef ~/Desktop/x
but no dice.

exiftool -Make="PENTAX Corporation" ~/Desktop/x/*.pef

or: cd ~/Desktop/x && exiftool -Make="PENTAX Corporation" *.pef

Apple OSX (iPhoto and Aperture), Bibble and C1 is header information:

Firmware 1.0: PENTAX Corporation .PENTAX K20D
Firmware 1.01: PENTAX .PENTAX K20D

I have tried to replace the header with hex editor
I don't have the problem myself (I'm skipping 1.01). But may I make a suggestion?

Why not patch a MacOS, Bibble, C1 system file using the very same hex editor?

The file in question should be findable using
$> find / -type f -exec grep -l 'PENTAX Corporation' '{}' \;
(using a system shell or cygwin under Windows).

For your convenience, Pentax didn't change the identification string's length (it used 12 blanks to erase the word 'Corporation'), so this should be a no brainer

In Bibble, if you change PENTAX Corporation to PENTAX, new files open nicely, but old ones show the licking Bibble (their cat that shows up on unrecognized files)

Changing the files so the program matches the old string seems far easier since they seem to match the string exactly, when a match on PENTAX alone had sufficed.

And using exiftool to change it on dozens of files in a matter of seconds is not a bad solution.

The shots that are untouched with the new PENTAX string open after treating /usr/bin/bibblepro with a hexeditor.
As do those new files that had the EXIF info changed to PENTAX Corporation. (Which already opened in the unmodified bibble pro, after the exif info was changed)
If someone could figure out how to edit bibblepro so unmodified PENTAX and PENTAX Corporation files open in a modified Bibble, that would be interesting, there is more than one place where one can edit the PENTAX Corporation, while it seems the first match alone makes new files work, it does not break new-exiffixed files. i tried replacing spcaes with zeros to see if cutting the string short would force it to match PENTAX alone in either string, but that does not work, only exact matches do :/

So we know we can make bibble work by changing the EXIF "Make", and we can match the new string within Bibble, and that matching the new string in a modified Bibble does not break matching on the exif modified files.....

exiftool -Make="Pentax " *.dng to treat old files will break files to where they work in neither modified nor unmodified Bibble, however you can change it back to corporation and they work again, all things considered, running exiftool on a folder of new images seems to be the most consistent solution, until they finish up Bibble5 and may have some time to backport the fix uinto Bibble4 as well.

Or are you shooting DNG, then of course it would be *.dng

What's the exact error exiftool spits out?

OK I'm a dumbass -- your script is terrific, with one tweak:

Code:
exiftool -Make="PENTAX Corporation" ~/Desktop/x/*.PEF
UNIX is case-sensitive of course (the files come in from the camera .PEF).

Imported into Aperture no problem -- thank you kindly!

I never even considered the caps, since mine load a .pef, not .PEF, i'm sure the `ls -al` was an eye opener
