Lens Focus Speed - K20D vs K200D - Fight!

Someone on DPReview mentioned the K20D plus as having faster autofocus than K200D perhaps because it uses a higher voltage battery. I warned that one shouldn't automatically assume this, though it wouldn't surprise me if this were the case.

I got around to testing that out this morning.

Method: Attach lens to each body, place body in marked spot. Manually turn focus to infinity, focus on high contrast target at minimum focus distance. Video tape this with focus range indicator in view.

I then comb through the video using Nero's video editing application, which goes down to frame-by-frame.

I gave a "start time" to the test on the frame just prior to seeing the focus indicator move. I gave an "end time" by audibly listening to the focus lock indicator, backing up the frame counter to *just* as the second beep ends. This took the most time but was important. I ran each focus test twice for each camera/lens.

THe K20D is using a freshly charged battery.
The K200D is using lithium AA's.

Lenses tested:

DA* 50-135mm SDM
DA 55-300mm, which has about a 180 degree focus throw

Results:

K20D with 50-135

Test 1: 1.27s total
Test 2: 1.16s total

K200D with 50-135

Test 1: 1.23s total
Test 2: 1.07s total

Conclusion - It looks like a big difference between K200D's minimum and K20D max, but realize this is 2/100 of a second and well within error range. Practically even.

K20D with 55-300

Test 1: 1.27s total
Test 2: 1.31s total

K200D with 55-300

Test 1: 1.30s total
Test 2: 1.37s total

Conclusion: Here we have again: Same test results, given a margin of error. Practically the same speed.

So there you have it. A test of focus speeds using both cameras. Had I been asked before doing this test which one I thought was faster, I would have said the K20D -- the lenses just feel snappy. But, I think it's a placebo effect and testing at least initially shows they're dead even.

Comments welcome and thanks for reading.

Good stuff! (especially since I have a K200D on the way)

Thanks for taking the time to conduct this test and for posting it.

Good test, thx.
Out my mind at ease since sometime it makes me think how much the K20d is better than my K200d

That's a good idea with the video camera. Did you have it really close to the camera so it would record the beep? Or just somewhere nice and quiet?

This would be interesting with the SDM on and SDM off with the 50-135.

Surprising results. I thought the K20D should have faster AF over the K200D (as of the K10D vs K100D).

Not surprising I would assume both the K200D and the K20D would have similar AF motors if not the same motor. One just has more functions than the other and has a different internal hardware/software setup. Essentially both are designed to focus the same lenses.

It was interesting to note the K200D focused the shorter focal length lens slightly faster than the K20D but when it came to the longer focal length lens the K20D was in front of the K200D. One could assume from this the K20D would be better suited to lenses with longer focal lengths albeit the difference in performace is minor.
