That seems a bit unnecessary.

OK - but both in my experience and according to my manual, you cannot shoot with the K-50 in mirror-lock-up....

If it works as you say, then I agree it seems that it's not possible. Probably needs to have the mirror go down and back up again for metering and AF. I'll have to see what it does in manual mode. If I do all the settings first and then go LV, it may give me the benefit of the doubt, the I have a feeling that you're right and you just can't do it.

If you shoot in 2s delay, the mirror is up.

bingo - that's the only way around MLU for the K-50... it's a shame that you have to resort to that, but.....

Under 2 s, it can happen many things. The moment is gone. You can take one shoot with a fast shutter time, but then itīs over. Take a lot of shots starting at a distance and slowly get closer to the bird so it get use to the camera, but that takes to long time for most birds, they fly away.
If you use a sweater or something to bind round your camera to make it more silent. Perhaps it helps to use a radio or something to make a noise so the camera donīt scares and buy a K3II next time.

Does K3 have the same muffled shutter sound similar to K5? Or is K3 even quieter?

Some cameras have an electronic shutter mode which is virtually quiet because there is no mechanical movement. Nikon 1, Panasonic GH4, and some others have the option, but there are issues with capturing motion with electronic shutters.

Pentax Q has a near-silent leaf shutter in some of its lenses, but if you are birding and using the K to Q adapter there is a shutter. It's comparatively quiet but not very responsive - about 1 FPS max

Of all the Pentaxes, I think the K-5 has the quietest shutter, followed by the K-01, then K-3

So K3 is louder than K5? Hope it is not as loud as K30, I returned a K30 because of the loud shutter and mirror flop.

Not in my experience.. K-3 is definitely the quieter of the two. My K-5 and K-7 seem to be about the same, marginally quieter on the K-5.

It's a joy shooting next to the Canikon Full Frame "pros" using their 5D and D3s cameras... Only noise I sometimes make are from my DA lenses when autofocusing though...

The K-5 and K-3 are close and nowhere near as loud as lower-level cameras. My wife's K-x made a neat but noticeable scissor-like sound.

Maybe it comes down to your own aural sensitivities-to my ears, the K-5 is just a touch more muffled than the K-3.

The lens also seems to me to make a big difference in the noise. My K-3 is significantly louder with a Tamron 10-24 than it is with the Pentaxk 18-135 WR. Maybe the weather sealing also muffles the sound of the shutter.

If you all think the K-50 is noisy you should stand next to someone shooting with a Canon 1D Mark II N.

was trying to photograph a bird today and was fairly close to it. I was so sure in my mind that this one's gonna be a keeper. I do generally take 3 shots - To circumvent the shake issue when shooting handheld. However, as soon as I clicked the first one, the sound scared the bird away.. I have a Pentax k-50.
With my K-30, if the bird wasn't scared away by the "coffee grinder" noise of the 55-300 (or my old 170-500) focusing, the shutter racket didn't bother them.

As others have said, the shutter on the K-3 is MUCH quieter. Screwdrive AF seems quieter on the K-3 too - maybe because of the more powerful motor?

The quietness of the combination of a DC lens (18-135) and the K-3 shutter was a revelation to me. DC AF in a 55-300 (or its successor) would be great. I guess I could stump up for a DA*300 with its SDM focusing (and stellar resolution, by all accounts) - but I'd have trouble justifying that to my better half.
