Yeah, that aperture problem basically seems to happen within the first few thousand shots. They had a bad batch and the aperture and mirror actuators test fine, but die early. covered by warranty.

That said, i love my k-50. Good camera.

Thanks for all the replies. It really looks like either a K-50, K-30, K-S2, K-5 or K-3 will more than satisfy my needs, so will just find the best deal on one. There's a K-50 + 18-135 for around 410GBP brand new I am looking at which is tempting me. :-)

All good comments,
Perhaps I will choose my words more carefully in future.
Thanks-Shawn

Being from Sweden you have the -10° cold-weather operating space and weather seals, which even I value in the balmy PacNW. The K-30/50 have in general been very reliable and take excellent images. And with the 18-135 fewer lens swaps is good too.

Pentax K-3/3ii is HIGH-END.

Pentax K-50 is MID-RANGE.

Pentax K-500 is ENTRY-LEVEL.
My understanding is the K500 is a K50 without the WR seals. If that's all then it's a great camera at an entry-level price.. and it too can do -10°C. I thought the seals were part of that feature, but I guess not

You can't go wrong with that 18-135, no matter which camera you choose. Most people hang on to theirs, it's a great lens.

I own the K50 and K3II and love both. If your price in Sweden is anything like ours in the US for the K50, you won't be disappointed for a moment. Get the K3 later, when you find a real use for the resolution. For instance, I shoot wildlife and really enjoy the increased cropping ability on the K3. But I take my K50 with me instead in the kayak... just in case.

You will love the K-50, I've hammered mine over the last few months since getting it and it hasn't missed a beat. It's been soaked while walking through rainforests, and no problems. The Astrotracer function is awesome and unique, and the unit as a whole produces fantastic images.

Just thought I'd report back in! Sat and looked at pictures and read reviews for a few days and finally settled on a lightly used K-5 being the best bang for the buck for me. Found one for sale (silver edition, the v2 that doesn't have the upgrades) here in Sweden for 3500 SEK (400 USD) including the DA 35/2.4, Takumar 55/1.8 and a Helios 44M. Supposedly 2250 shutter count on the body. People tend to ask way too much for (and subsequently never sell) their used Pentax gear over here, but this felt like a pretty decent deal by any standards. Should get it in the mail next week.

Given the inclusion of the DA 35 lens that sounds like a pretty good deal to me as that alone tends to retail for around US$150+. Great camera!

Yeah, I thought it seemed nice since people generally want 400-500 USD for a K5 body alone around here (and refuse to budge on price). I miss living in the US where prices were more reasonable, over here everyone wants a premium for their stuff and then you see the same ad sitting there for months and months... go figure!

I know what you mean about that. Watched someone sit on a Helios here in Canada for six months. They wanted $80 for a 44-2 with a busted up filter ring. Refused to budge.

Other Favorite: *ist D for $400 last year. Sat there forever.

Oh yeah, I love it when people think it's reasonable with say a 30% discount off what they paid for their DSLR 6-7 years ago Saw an ad the other day where someone wanted around 800 USD for an Olympus E520 body ("It cost me almost twice that new!").

An ist D here in Australia is for sale for 550 bucks, my K50 cost less than that and was brand new.

Australians are crazy like that. Basic rule of economics is that it is irrelevant what you paid 1-100 yrs ago. The only rule is what the market will pay today.

K200D sitting on fleabay for $400 at the moment when a K-7 is struggling to sell for $300....

I have now had my second Pentax aperture motor failure. The first was on a K 30 after a few years and the second was on a K50 after six months. I have seen non fix from Pentax that would resolve this. So I wouldn't buy a K 50 unless you get the 2years of extended warranty.
