OOOps! You guys are right - *istDL not *istD - that's my fault for reading and not paying attention to the visual evidence. I had an *istDS which I enjoyed for a short while but the *istDL is much less interesting than the K-7 which is a great camera from everything I have read.

I can't see how a bad SD card would cause the same line on multiple bodies rather than just creating corrupt files. Since the line happens on two bodies I could see it being a software issue but I still find that less likely.

My money is on a scratch or hair in the lens. which would explain it showing up on both bodies. When you get it, hold it up to a white wall and look through the lens while holding the aperture lever open. Since it's a dark line I'll bet you see a dark cat or dog hair. In my experience, scratches tend to leave grey or diffused marks rather than dark lines. Scratches, dust, hairs, and etc. also have more of an effect at smaller apertures than wide open, so try taking pictures at different aperture settings to see if that makes a difference.

If it turns out the line is actually in different places on both bodies you may have hair or dust on the sensors, in which case a rocket blower would be the first thing to try.

Well, regardless of the problem with the cameras, I think they will still provide a vehicle for her to explore the world of photography..... lines or no lines. I'm finding this a great deal of fun and I can sense her excitement. Even thought I'm an old codger, I can still remember when I was her age and someone helped me out. I guess this is what they mean about, "What goes around, comes around," eh?

Maybe if we're lucky, we can see some of her images and see her progression. That in itself would make it all worthwhile, don't ya' think?
