The _images-that-ended-the run of the K20D

After playing with the series of images that produced these two images, we decided we needed a second K-5.

We just couldn't tease as much out of the K20D images... sometimes close, but no cigar.

Well... obvious choice, given similar starting points regarding exposure values and ISO..?

Gorgeous pictures, by the way!

Is the first image a K-5 and the second a K20D?

Correct.

They were not taken at exactly the same time, so it's not a direct comparison, the K20D images probably had more light, however, we just couldn't get the detail in the shadows with the K20D , we could with the K-5. Tess shot the K-5 , I shot the K-20D, I was determined to show I could do just as good, but in the end, I had to admit we needed s second K-5.

These are the best examples, but we both took over 20 images and compared them all against each other. It was not the detail in the clouds, that changed over the, it was our ability to bring up shadow detail.

Looks like you make the most of living near Algonquin. Beautiful, especially the first. I have a K20D I am just getting to know so is it the limited dynamic range that makes the K5 necessary? Lack of resolution? Do you print large?

Now I see, just saw your last post.

Guess I'm stuck with the K20D for a while yet but since I still think like a slide film shooter, this scene looks ready made for a graduated ND to me.

I did fine with the K20D for about 6 months, shooting beside the K-5. This set of pictures really tested the dynamic range of both, but, we also have a lot of pictures where you probably wouldn't be able to tell which was which. W do print large, and really don't notice a difference at 20x30.

Here's couple taken maybe a half hour apart, during the same time period. I'm not sure you can pick out which is the K20D.

This is a K20D image that sold for $300 as a 20x30 canvas. I can say it would have been better taken with a K-5, but I liked the print, and so did the person who bought it.

I did not see anything interesting in the first post :-)
So I was wondering if it is like the Emperor's invisible cloth!

Edit: Turned out that the images are hosted elsewhere and my work firewall is blocking that domain!

I'm wondering if the position of the sun in the sky has any bearing on this. For example, in the first one the sun is higher, not yet obscured by the mountains and probably shedding more light over the tress. In the second one, the sun already seems to be mostly behind the mountains. And, I'm wondering if the forest is more in shadow as a result.
