k3/k3ii vs k5iis for sports

Hi,

I have k5iis and love it. I use it 50% for travel, 20% portrait, 30% tennis\surfing shooting. I don't use build-in flash. I'd like to have additional body for sport events like tennis tournaments to shoot with mostly Tamron 70-200 and DA*300. My options are:

1. New k3/k3ii. It's an expensive option. I'd like to go this way only if it will give me a noticeable improvement in actions shooting;
2. Any used k5ii otherwise;
3. Wait for the k3ii successor. If there is going to be a k3ii successor within 6 months, I'd like to wait for it. Any chances/rumors for that given the upcoming FF release?

Please help me to make a decision

I believe the K-3 series has a big improvement over K-5 series for AF.

FF is still listed as being 2016 Spring Debut. No idea if that means they will be selling it in 2016 or just fully revealing it.

The K-3 will give you a predictive focus implementation for your sports stuff, Pukipuki.

But I happily shoot football, cycling and cricket with a K-30.

Nope.

It wasn't coincidence that the K-3II was released when it looked like the FF release was going to be delayed, there were lots of potential Pentax camera buyers holding off buying a new body and the K-3II didn't need a lot of redesigned components, so it could be released to market quickly with minimal capital investment. For economies of scale, the APS-C successor to the K-3II will use a lot of new components designed for the FF camera and will cannibalize sales and production capacity from the FF camera. I don't expect to see this camera out until FF sales have started to taper off or a competitor releases a top-tier APS-C body that draws away potential Pentax customers.

For some reason, inventories of photographic equipment don't turnover very quickly and it takes a long time for a particular model of camera or lens to disappear from the marketplace. That also works against Pentax releasing a successor to the K-3II in the next six months. The earliest I would expect it to be announced is November of this year, otherwise it will be early 2017.

Among the K-3's advantages are a faster screwdrive motor, so this would increase the focusing speed of your 70-200mm. The higher AF point density would also potentially help improve your keeper rate. On top of that, the K-3 II received some minor algorithmic tweaks to improve accuracy for subjects moving toward the camera.

The K-3 family is certainly a step forward compared to the K-5 II family, though I'd stop short of saying that it's a huge difference since the fundamental way in which the AF works remains unchanged.

It's only a matter of time before Pentax responds to Canon and Nikon's latest APS-C bodies with an updated flagship, but nobody knows when. If it were to happen this year, I wouldn't expect it until the end of the year, since a considerable amount of effort currently seems to be going to the full frame project.

Well i recently bought a K3II and i have to say it's a big improvement over my K50 in terms of AF performance. I have to say i am totally impressed with it's performance so far. After all i bought the K3II after reading here in the in depth review that it does have the best AF performance PENTAX has to offer. During a recent trip to a lagoon to photograph birds, it performed brilliantly and the number of keeper photos were enormous. Even a friend with a Canon 7DII was impressed by it's performance. Also picture quality was impressive and by having 24 mpx means you can crop heavily without losing quality.

I am posting a photo of a cormoran from that trip to see for yourself.

Hope that i helped you.

.
Yes, the other day I was photographing my girlfriend during a sunset and at the end, she began to walk fast towards me. And the K-3II focused very good with a Tamron 18-200 lens.
I don't know how fast the K-5's AF is but the K-3 did a good job. I will test this more.

Huh, that was easy one for you guys I'll go with k3ii.

I appreciate the help, few really good points on k3ii performance and expected timeframe of it's successor.
