Menu > Custom Setting > Using aperture ring > Permitted

then use M mode, set your aperture with the aperture ring on the lens, press the green button to meter, and change the setting as you want.

I had the same user error - see pages 249 - 251 of your K20D Manual. All questions are answered, but they are hard to tweeze out.

Keep asking questions here - everybody helps.

I believe it will never tell you what f stop the lens is set to, as the camera has no way of finding out whether you input the focal length or not. The focal length setting affects only the shake reduction, so until you find out why you can't set the focal length, you can still shoot with the lens, just with possibly ineffective SR.

Are you meant to input the digital focal length? or the 35mm equivalent?

You need to put in the actual focal length of the lens.

Pity you didn't buy your camera from Walmart, Nicholas - they could have answered all your questions. ;-) . (aussie attempt at humour)
