The DA*60-250 Value Proposition

While all of the Camera manufacturers make exceptional lenses. I have always found that an equivalent lens among the other major players is cost prohibitive for me. The DA* 60-250 f/4 is among my favorites and it is hard to find anything within the Canikon world that is this well built, has such stunning IQ, WR and this affordable. I'm sure that I can go across the spectrum of the Pentax lineup and say the same thing matching up the premium lenses against the other players. What are your thoughts? What is the one lens for you that is unmatched in Value by the big boys? While I hear constant complaints about the Pentax lens lineup, I cant find a focal length that I cannot cover within the existing lineup. Of course I have never been a tilt shift kinda guy:-)

You are correct with your assessment of the DA* 60-250. It is wonderful to use, but my 100 macro WR is also a gem.

I would say DA* 60-250/4, DA* 300/4 and DFA 100/2.8 Macro for sure and maybe others

I don't know enough about other brands, but is there anything quite like the FA Limiteds? They not only offer unique rendering, but they are priced within the reach of the enthusiast.

Also the humble DA 18-135 deserves a mention. There are similar zooms in other brands, but until recently I think the DA was the only WR one. Fuji now has an 18-135 which is WR (and IS), but it is about double the price of the DA.

Nothing wider than 10mm (DA 10-17 Fisheye). Nothing above 450mm, except the DA 560. Both specialist requirements though. The issue is more that some niches aren't filled in the same way, particularly because of limited 3rd party support. For example, neither Tamron nor Sigma 150-600 is available in K-mount as a more affordable and longer zoom option than the DA 150-450. And of course there isn't the same range of very fast primes as in some other mounts.

Not being negative. I agree with the main point. And the trend is up: Ricoh has released a number of new lenses in recent years and most of the real gaps (e.g. quality wildlife lenses, 70-200 f2.8) have been filled.

My 20-40 Limited is a delight and lives on the K-3II. You'll always get naysayers from the Canikon arena but maybe that's down to envy - I well remember the ashen expression on a friend's face when he felt the build quality compared to his D7200. I also chuckled the other day when another friend expressed appreciation over some photos I'd taken recently in France. The question came; 'Great photo - what do you shoot - Canon?'

I'm not much of a tilty/shifty kind of guy either, but for the occasions when I do need to correct verticals, then DCU5 has a tool for that...

I have long felt that across the lineup, the Pentax offerings were a greater value. But I also have to acknowledge that there are huge gaps in my knowledge and experience. I have heard and seen reviews of the Canon 70-200 f/4 (both IS and non-IS) that show they give spectacular results, for a not-so-horrendous price. Thanks. Glenn
