Perhaps the 80-320 could make a comeback...

Now that the FF has officially been announced, pre-orders are being taken, and we're seeing the return of some older lens designs (28-105mm) perhaps there may be a possibility of the 80-320mm making a comeback with hd coatings and wr... and maybe better aperture (3.5-5.6 instead of 4-5.6). What say you all? Discuss.

I'd rather have them release a new lens with DC. The FA 80-320 is so loud and slow to focus!

Sorry man... I just bought one on sat. and it arrived today, otherwise I would've bought yours. Though if they brought back the 80-320... hd coatings, wr, hood, and dc af, with wider aperture range (3.5-5.6 or possibly 2.8-4.5). I think it'd be popular for a consumer zoom considering it had decent IQ.

Is the 28-105 really an old design?

There was definitely an FA version of the 28-105... probably an F version and maybe an FAJ. The FA version I'm familiar with, I own... the FA 28-105mm f/4-5.6 (IF).

Yeah, but apart from the range being similar, is there any proof/confirmation?

The one redeeming quality of the 80-320 to me, having used it in several trips, would be simply how cheap it was. Nothing really is particularly great about it compared to most of the recent lenses, the AF is slow and loud, the lens creep is bad, and it doesn't deal with lens flare or CA well. That said it's my go to lens when I needed some extra reach. Even though I don't plan on getting a FF camera anytime soon (if ever), I'd love to see them release a new version instead that addresses some of these issues (and of course weather sealing would be great!). I'd consider replacing mine with a new version once it fell within my budget.
