which wide angle zoom

Hi Folks,

I'm shopping for a wide angle for my K20D and looking for feedback from the forum.

My options in no order are;

Pentax DA* 16-50mm f/2.8 ED/AL (IF) SDM
Sigma 17-34mm f2.8-4 EX DG
Tamron AF17-50mm f2.8 di-II LD

I would like to hear from those of you who have experience with any of the lens, good bad and ugly.

I would be happy to hear about other options I've missed. I have my trusty FA 50mm f/1.4 so I don't have to go to 50mm. My Tamron AF70-300mm F/4-5.6 Di LD Macro does quite well for the longer ranges and conditions I tend to shoot.

I'm really looking for a replacement to an older full frame FA 28-80 which just isn't up to the task on the K20D.

Thanks in adv.

Karl

Hi, I too shopped for a wide angle for my K20 3 months ago. Obviously, only you can make the decision which you think is best, but if you are looking for votes to be cast here goes----Tamron 17-50mm f 2.8 This was my choice and I am happy with it.

But I never shot with the other 2 lenses you mention here. I did do a lot of reading and tried to put the most weight in my decision on the personal reviews by actual owners of the lenses. That said, even the reviews were very good for the Tammy. Good luck!

Here is a link to 112 reviews of the Tammy, by actual owners, in all mounts so you can see how it fares against Nikon & Canon glass if you wish:
FM Reviews - AF 17-50mm F/2.8 XR Di II LD Aspherical [IF]

Ernest

sigma

is that sigma lens even a pentax mount? I know they have a 17-70 but have not heard of that range before.

I have the DA* 16-50/2.8. I won't trade it for anything else. Count my vote for it. I'm in the 97.5 % of purchasers reported as having gotten good copies.

Thanks Jewel and C_Rockies. Thanks for your feed back. I'm surprised there were fewer advicates for their lens. I'll have to make a quick trip to my local supplier and shoot both. I like the DA* because of the build quality and autofocus. The Tamron looks to control CA a bit better and I feel it may have a bit less vignetting.

I'll keep you up to date.

Cheers.

Not sure how the Sigma and Tamron price out, but focal-length wise I would lean toward the Pentax as it is the widest.

Are you sure you are thinking wide enough

I don't believe your classification odf 16-50mm (approximate range) is really wide enough.

16mm is equivelent to 24 mm field of view on a film camera, and I never found 24mm wide enough.

Although this range may be an interesting range to have as a "normal lens" to me wide is 10-20mm or 12-24mm

Karl: I have used the Tammy a lot with the K20. The only vignetting I get is @ 2.8, with the lens hood. Take off the lens hood and the vignetting is gone.
