Good one Heather!

Me, I couldn't care less about flash (though I own two plus radio controls) and so would echo the call from chedoy for the DA16-45mm. It's a big improvement over the kit and is used for pro shoots. Lenses over flash any day.

A good tripod is a big bonus.

I'm no expert, but I agree that buying a Pentax M42 converter (not a converter from another manufacturer) and used screwmount lenses from reliable sellers is a good approach.
Another good approach: buying used K-mount Pentax and used K-mount Takumar lenses from reliable vendors.
And, if shopping for a tripod (new or used), first do a bit of research in the Pentaxforums or elsewhere including perhaps going into a brick-and-mortar camera store to determine what head is most likely to meet your needs. (If you get a good enough deal on the tripod, the saving will help you get a different head if you need to replace one that comes with the tripod. As you may already know, the tripod might come without a head.)
All best wishes.

Get a lens...

... the DA 40 Limited for around $275.

It's awesome and will step you up to the next level, forever. 2 cent$.
