To avoid little gaps in the trails, you need to switch off the low shutter speed noise reduction, so that the camera does not proceed the dark frame subtraction. Some people favor the multishot technique versus long exposure because it avoids certain pixels to clip due to dark current (not recovered by dark frame substraction).
