Getting Oooh and Ahs with Pentax

I'm getting ooos and ahs when I pull out my K-5IIs at events. I never had that happen when I used to shot with a Canon. People don't know what to make of it especially when I attach one of the Limited lenses !

People frequently ask me as well. Most seem to assume it's some really fancy boutique brand.

The battery grip helps. (It was once mistaken for a 1DX.) The FA Limited lenses catch the eyes of some photographers, although this is less common. The metal barrels look like expensive, high-end lenses rather than the plastic of most consumer level Canikon lenses. That seems to help with the general populace.

As long as they don't assume it's an Olympus. Happened to me once when I was shooting my K-5 at a gig. A person alongside me (a pro Canon photographer) couldn't figure out what brand the 'little' camera I was using was, so she assumed it was micro 4/3.

Some of those have swollen to near APS-C size anyway, and are even bigger than M series Pentax film SLRs.

I usually get the "gawk" with a K5 and DA*60-250 especially with its behemoth lens hood mounted.

Someone I know was expressing an interest in Pentax, and they were really surprised when they learnt it wasn't m43

I showed my pictures to a photographer who was surprised that the pictures were taken from crop sensor camera. I use K50 with a50 1.7 and 40mm Ltd.

A fellow co-worker shoots sports with a Canon 7D and a Canon 70-200 f2.8 lens.
Talking photography he asked me what I use. When I replied Pentax K5II he went "Wooohaaa nooo, no, I'm just an amateur...." then he smiled and said "Sorry if I offended you...."
His lens alone costs more than most of my gear.....
I replied with an old local proverb "Hey, it's not the arrow, it's the indian shooting it!"

I definitely get looks when I have the HD Pentax-DA 40mm F2.8 Limited mounted up. It's so small and the red ring looks awesome.

The K-5IIS is a very nice camera. I have one too. Maybe it looks so nice the people can't help but notice.

My K-5 does not seem to attract any attention here but our yellow K-01 with XS40 on it certainly does! Quite a few people have approached me to find out more about it.

Ditto the comment on the K-01. I went to one of locations for Doors Open Toronto last summer (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doors_Open_Toronto) with my K5 and K-01, and a chap actually came right up to me to ask me what I was shooting with. I said Pentax, and he seemed quite perplexed when I mentioned that I went from a Canon SLR to a Pentax DSLR. Guess the 'norm' would have been the other way around. Me and my friend were the only ones with Pentax gear at that place, and I was quite stoked actually when I went to another location on the same event where we saw another couple with a Pentax. I couldn't see which exact model the man had, but the lady had a Pentax Q. It took all of my geek willpower to not take mine out of the bag as well and go Yay!!

I've been shooting Pentax for several years now, and for the most part none of the other shooters I encounter seem to care, if they even notice. I've gotten the occasional response over the years, but that's been few and far between. Ditto for my Panasonic GX7 and my old Olympus E-P1, even though I think they're two of the best-looking cameras I've ever seen.

I know I've approached people many times over the years because they had an interesting or unusual camera or lens, but I guess most people just don't care.

And here's some camera porn for your Monday morning:

I reckon the Takumar-style zoom ring doesn't hurt the looks either.
