What are blinkies

I see people mention blinkies every now and then. What are they?

'Blinkies' is the slang term for exposure warnings. On most Pentax camera's there is a selectable menu setting which allows under and/or over exposure warnings to flash red and yellow respectively when reviewing a shot. Some people like them, some do not.

Does my k3ii have blinkies? I'm just curious. Some guy was carrying on about how great blinkies were, and I guess enquiring minds just have to know

Yes it does. They can be enabled in live view through the live view menu ("highlight alert"):

And in the playback menu for playback mode:

Despite being called "highlight alert" in the menu, the blinkies work for both over- and under-exposure. But don't be fooled: since they are generated based on a JPEG image, you may be able to recover the highlighted areas in RAW (usually shadows, some times highlights, if the degree of overexposure is mild).

I use them as a quick check on my exposure. I want to see a few dots, not splotches, in any area that should be pure white. A white cloud for example. That shows I am exposing as far right as I can.
More than a few dots and you might get blown highlights. Some is recoverable if shooting RAW but you know you are on the edge.

If you are not using them you should! I got the suggestion (from here at PF) and man, it has made a lot of difference.
