Macro Ring? Yes, No??

Has anyone got or heard about the third party macro rings that you can (apparently) screw onto the end of your lense and works wonders with up to 10x magnification. take a look at this link on ebay to see what I mean: MACRO CLOSE UP LENSES for Pentax K10D K100D K110D !!! - eBay (item 170239304183 end time Jul-20-08 03:51:42 PDT)

are these rings good or just rubbish???

That depends on what you expect them to do. they usually will give you some distortion of your image. The more magnification or the more close up filters you stack, the greater the distortion, especially on the edges.

However, they tend to be cheap, inexpensive, and will give you shots you couldn't do without using something more expensive. If they are cheap enough, get them and have fun exploring their qualities. Just don't expect image quality that you would get with something far more expensive such as macro tubes, or a dedicated macro lens.

EDIT: They fit any camera...not just Pentax models listed. They are just close up filters that screw on the end of your lens.

There is a difference between extension rings and macro lens thingies that screw onto your lens. Extension rings go between your camera body and lens and (typically) contain no glass at all. They're just simple spacer tubes. Lacking glass, they don't introduce any aberrations of their own.

Here are some images made with regular lenses and just those simple spacer extension tubes.
