My curiosity got the better of me and I did an unscientific test not to see if one is better than the other but only how they differed or were the same. Both shots from the same distance, Sigma 150-500 Bigmos @ 500mm + Kenko 1.5x TC, 1/2000 @ f/11, ISO 6400, PP in LR CC only to reduce highlights (both at -100), full image resized to 1024 px on the long edge.

K-1.

K-3

Shoot them both in crop mode to get an apples-to-apples comparison. I would expect the K-3 to offer more detail at low ISO with the advantage shifting to the K-1 at higher ISOs.

they both work the contrast needs to be adjusted in the bottom one but not by much.

You must test on a static subject that remains in the same light - exactly. If anything moves, it's impossible to evaluate IQ, and if there is as much change as there is between the two images posted, exposure may be different.

I have a K-3 and I am very happy with it. Have not considered a K-1, at least not yet. I would not hesitate on the dog however. What breed it it? What age, is it a puppy or adult? Beautiful dog.

My guess: it's an Australian shepherd ("Aussie"), a breed actually developed in the USA (but the Australian cattle dog, AKA "blue heeler," is an Australian breed).

There is a warning article from Sigma stating that the K-1 mount may get a small scratch on it if used with some Sigma lenses such as the Sigma 150-500. I know you mentioned you are using a TC, so me mentioning this may be non-applicable, but I thought I would just in case. I have a Sigma 150-500 also.

I have the notice and a tiny scratch from Sigma.

Thank you all for the comments. This is an unscientific comparison of each camera and there is no winner IMHO. Each will have it's place in my photography.

No doubt about it.. K1 looks more natural and color has better rendering.

Ideally the K-1 shot should be zoomed in to the same image size as the K-3 provided. But I agree at this point viewed in this web site the crops appear to show that the K-1 is slightly more natural looking. I would not turn my nose up at either.

I hope there will be a K-3 III with at least the AF of the K-1 (actually I'd take the AF from a D300S).

I will be shooting with both for awhile. Just because the K-1 is the new kid on the block doesn't turn the K3 into chopped liver and it still works well and is significantly faster in operation than the K-1, with regard to frame rates and buffer. K-1 definitely has high iso advantage, though and for low light settings, I would definitely choose it over the K3.
