I appreciate all the help here!

I've managed a way to make it work but I'm weighing the benefit. It would work to use a simple relay or double switch to trigger the camera and flash simultaneously but independently. I have most of the necessary gear and know-how to make this happen. The education of it is the goal but there is a concept behind it all which might make it all worth while but it's becoming much more complicated than a simple camera setting.

If you have the know how to insert a relay on the flash trigger then a variable capacitor on the coil pin would create a variable delay. You would want to isolate the camera hotshoe from a relay coil though as the coil breakdown would likely blow the camera circuit....a chunky diode should be fine but I wouldn't want to stick my neck out with your kit!

If your camera has the PC connection for the flash, you may be able to utilize this to help with the triggering of the auxiliary flash. Just watch your trip voltage!
