Sorry about a dumb question:

What would it do?
in addition to the electronic aperature control, it should also allow for continuous autofocus with the 18-135, although that might be a pipe dream as the K-3 doesn't have the Hybrid AF system. Still it would be cool.

So, in a nutshell: being able to use "K-1-designed" lenses with the K3/K3II ?

The question is - are they planning to migrate their lens line to electronic aperture control in the near future, or for now there will be some odd product like RE lenses and perhaps few other lenses optimized for video, maybe T&S?

If they're migrating their lens line, then the K-3 really should be updated if possible. K-5-family cameras would be a nice bonus (I own a K-5IIs and not a K-3 by the way).
If it's just the RE for now...

P.S. jpzk, the 55-300 definitely isn't a "K-1 designed" lens.

No, not K1 designed, just different.

The new aperture control method is already used by Nikon and Canon so third party lens makers (Sigma) may return to making lenses for Pentax once this is updated because it would be easier and cheaper to adapt the mounts.

Let's add the K-30, and I'll support the petition!

They already have said that it will be compatible with the K3II with a firmware update, and it is for a newer aperture control and lens that allows continuous AF during video. My biggest thing is for the aperture control with my K3 since I have a feeling this is the direction that they are going on lenses.

Turns out that the K-70 does. And any DC lens too, in addition to the new PLM lens.

And this illustrates the problem: once you draw a line, anyone can say "mine, which is just across the line, should be included also".
Apply this process recursively {i.e., repeat the process, using the end value as the new beginning value} and soon someone wants the istD to be included.

I have a hunch that they might already be updating the K-3, just haven't said so in the K-70 press release.

Doubt anything will happen for the K-50 or K-5, though.
After the K-1 (and K-5, K-5IIs and K-3) . . . K-3 Mark III is next on the list. Looking forward to it.

Exactly. Which is exactly why consumers tend to not appreciate planned obsolescence.
