K 200D Shutter Query

Hi,

After reading the K1 review I was curious about the number of shutter activations my K200D was actually designed for so I looked at the camera reviews here and there is no mention of it in the specifications and I have been unable to find it elsewhere. Anybody know ?

It will probably outlive me anyway but it would be nice to know.

It isn't specified, in other words Pentax doesn't stand behind a firm number of actuations before shutter failure becomes likely.

Since the flagships back then were rated for 100,000, perhaps half of that would be reasonable to expect.

From somewhere I recall that the expected shutter life was the same as others of that era; 100k - which is only a statistical best design guess anyway.

But I wouldn't worry, even 50K would likely outlive other reasons to let it go. If you use one long enough to see the shutter fail it'll surely be due to a mishap of some sort, not normal use.

The K200D was probably a mistake when marketed as an entry-level body. It's been pretty much bullet-proof. You don't see many for resale and it's never required a firmware update except for SD card upgrade. If the VF had been a prism instead of a mirror it would have been a K10 competitor for marketing.

I liked it so much when it first came out I gradually acquired four of 'em after the KX arrived expecting them to fail like other electronic appliances -- I still have 'em all and they're still going strong today. The same great outdoors CCD sensor as the K10 - and small enough for a nice travel kit.

I also have the K7 which I bought so that I could use the 1.4x extender, which of course I never bought. The K7's shutter is rated at 100,000 actuations and although reviewers praised it when released and it's fine if you stick to ISO 400 or less I have never actually loved it in the way I do the K200D. I find the CCD smoother, if that is the correct expression than the CMOS. I would not mind if it was a bit lighter though, they seem to get heavier as you get older so I've partially solved that problem by using the DA40 70 and 21, I just put one on the camera and if I have chosen the correct one for the outing and if not I'll zoom with my feet as far as I can.

Thank you all.

By the way its nice to see that Adam looks at posts.

Thank you, thats a very interesting site, seems Adam's guess of around 50,000 actuations is pretty near the mark.
