Sticking AE-L button

Our K10D appears to have a sticky AE-L button. It interferes with the operation of the front and back scroll wheel in manual, meaning that you can't set either the aperture or the shutter speed independently - they keep on moving together as if the mode was in Av...
The only way to solve this is to look for the "star" icon in the viewfinder and press the AE-L button to clear it / disconnect it...!

Is there something we are missing in the menu set up or do we have a maintenance problem here? No problem on our K5...

Thanks to all for any pointers.

This is normal as far as I press it once to set exposure and it holds until you take a picture or press again to cancel.

You're right, that's what I thought too, but the problem is that adjusting the exposure with the scroll wheels are not very reliable beyond 2 or 3 clicks. This is only in manual mode
