kx with the new Pentax 18-50 4-5.6 wr lens -- anyone tried it ?

Hi

I am thinking of replacing the old usual kit lens 18-55 with the pentax 18-50..Anyone tried this combination ?
I am curious how it behaves.

I would advise against it. You don't replace a kit lens with what's basically another kit lens. Look at the 18-135 or 16-85 zooms in the first instance to give you increased capability. As it stands, you would lose 5mm at the long end and a half stop of light at the short. Why cripple your camera?

Alternatively, if the kit lens is your only lens, consider a 50-200 or 55-300mm zoom (the WR versions) to expand your horizons, or maybe something at the wide end if that's more your thing (e.g. 12-24mm, 10-17 fisheye). But don't do something that would shrink them.

Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8-4.5 HSM

it may a better option but on the other hand is not as light and small as the pentax 18-50

I replaced the 18-55 kitted with my K-30 by an 18-135, which I love.
However, I should tell you that I intensely dislike the {noisy to me} screw drive, so part of my motivation was to get the DC motor.

For $419.00 the Sigma 17-50 2.8 HSM is an outstanding lens and a great value.

What's your budget for a replacement lens? What are you hoping to gain by making this change? Answering these questions will help folks suggest a replacement lens that better fits your needs.

My wife's K-S2 came with the 18-50 DC. It is quiet and focuses fairly quickly. Sharpness is not the greatest. It is lightweight if that is important to you.
