Guess noise keeps us occupied
Tripod and long exposures help against noise. So does overexposing a bit (I usually add 0.7 to 1 EV) but not if the subject is not still...
But I still wonder at what level noise is controlled BEFORE the image is compressed into jpeg. Is it all sensor construction / wiring, or do some camera's do something clever to the RAW file?

There is a trick - take multiple shots, minimum three, of the same subject. Image averaging smooths out the noise but does seem to soften edges a bit. Try it and see for yourself. This works great if you can do seven shots of the same subject. You need a sturdy tripod though.
Well, you need more than a sturdy tripod. You also need software that can put your three shots together usefully, and even before that, you need a subject that can sit perfectly still for the time it takes to make three exposures. I don't have either. ;-)

Comparing the K10 with the 5D is stupid.
The 5D is full frame and 4 times the price.
If you want to compare noise on both, take a Canon in the same range of price.
The K10 is a midrange....no more
5D is a semipro....Pentax dont have semi pros , wathever people say here. Even the K20 is a midrange camera, a few steps under semipro.

But it makes darn good pictures
