K10 D is only good at 400 ISO

I have no luck shooting at anything higher than 400 ISO with my K10 D.
Does anybody know any adjustments in the camera so I can shoot at 800 ISO without so much noise.

I see you only have Pentax 16 - 45mm F4 and Pentax 50 - 200mm F4-5.6 in your info (correct me if I am wrong) get some faster lens and shot in iso 100-400, that's what I do. Sometimes I go as far as ISO640, but that's about it. Of course, you can use flash too

Shoot in brighter lighted conditions :-)
You can spin ISO up to 1250 in sunlight w/o much noise...

do you shoot raw?

how is your histogram?

which lens are you using?

how do you post process?

You could try turning up the noise reduction settings.......
And learn to live with some noise. It happens.

In camera no. However the noise is there on purpose Pentax could have turned up the NR and made it clean at iso800, they allowed the noise to keep detail. Don't think its a short coming of the K10/GX10 its not; as the K20 compared to its rivals it has more noise but more detail. And shooting raw would of course be best. This camera really is to be used with software NR, be it in your PP program or a version like I have Noise Ninja Pro. The NR is fantastic and I can get clean files all the way to iso1600 if I expose right, and I do mean right. Like the other poster said in daylight I have accidentally shot at iso800 or iso1000 and did not even know it. You could get faster glass but you really are wasting what the camera was designed to do by not PP the noise. This is a semi-pro camera, serious and was not made user friendly you have to do some of the work. The K10/GX10 have amazing abilities by that I mean detail and lots of it all the way to iso1600 and the files are very workable, Pentax allowed you lots of freedom. So bottom line if you try to use high iso straight from the camera you very well may be disappointed a lot, but PP the noise with a good program and you will have a cleaner more detailed pic than most of its rivals of the time.

If your worried about the noise in prints it doesn't usually show up in them. Unless your printing BIG prints off.

I'm with Gooshin here: please show us some of the shots at, say, 800 that you find unacceptable.

If the light is good, then most of the time, we would all prefer to shoot at ISO 100! But I shoot with my K10D above ISO 400 quite a bit and find the results more than satisfactory. I will say something I've said here before, that there's more to noise in a photo than the ISO. I've had unpleasantly noisy results at 400, and very nice results at 800 or sometimes even higher. Don't know exactly what it is - quality ohf light, focal length, something.

Anyway, can you show us a shot?

I have no problems regarding noise up to 1250. Some times 1600iso is still acceptable.

1/8s f/4.0 at 24.0mm iso1000 (DA16-45)

1/13s f/4.0 at 18.0mm iso800 (DA16-45)

1/10s f/2.8 at 40.0mm iso1250 (DA40)

You can reduce the noise in high ISO pictures by over exposing a little bit (just experiment to see what works for you). Noise will show up more in dark areas than light areas, so try to compose with that in mind.

Like others have suggested, show some examples and with camera settings. I have taken nice photos at iso 1000 and 1250.

I am about to ask the stupidest question and hope no one that knows how long I have been using the K10 notices.

How to you adjust the ISO like you guys are showing? 640,1000,1250 etc... I assume in the TAV mode but I want to be sure.

You select these iso exactly as you would do normally, it works in all modes.

But to get these additional steps, you need to set the EV steps to 1/3 EV in the custom menu.

No. Its the camera. PP is the only way to go.
