I think most people's choices are limited to the lenses they own and are familiar with, not lenses they Wish they had

So for me my 3 lens kit is usually a DA 14, FA 31 and one of 4 longer lenses I own depending on what I'm shooting. Those choices include the FA 100 macro, or DA*50-135, or DA*200 or my F*300.

If forced at gunpoint to have only 3 lenses for the rest of eternity I'd take my Pentax DFA 24-70, Sigma 100-300 f4 and Sigma 500 f4.5.

I can do just about anything with the combination.

While I have a lot more than just three lenses, I prefer to travel light and will often take only three lenses at a time. My favorite three lens kits would be the DA 12-24, DA 16-85, and the M 75-150 or the DA 15 Limited, the DA 21 Limited, and the DA 35 Limited.

I have followed that practice since I got my first SLR in 1979, when a typical photographer's kit would consist of 28mm, 50mm, and some kind of telephoto zoom.
My version today is a Sigma 10-20mm, Pentax-DA 18-135mm, Pentax-DA 55-300mm, which gives me much more flexibility than I ever had before.

My K-3 3 lens kit would be FA31, DA21, and then a kit zoom, in order of most use.

For K-1, FA43, FA31, and an FA kit zoom, again in order of use.

Does this happen often in the US? (Nothing would surprise me.)

The 18-135 alone covers the full range I had with two zooms on my old film SLR, with weather resistance, quiet AF and one-third the weight. The idea that two lightweight affordable lenses could have covered 28-450mm FFE would have seemed like a dream then, not to mention adding a third for 15-30mm FFE.

Good thread.

I plan to run the 15, 20-40, 70 limiteds as a compact do-it-all kit for a while and see where that leaves me.

Jus' rememberin' back to the days when my three lens kit consisted of a Spotty, a Tak 28/3.5, a 55/1.8 and a 135/3.5. Each of which still resides on a shelf next to me; unused for many years.

K5 with 18-135, 55-300 and 150-500. Its' what I've got and use.

Although the 55-300 (a very nice copy) doesn't get used as much as it once did since I got the 150-500. I tend to shoot at the long end (400-500).

Sounds like I need the 10-20 to complete my three.

10 to 500 in a three lens combination - truly amazing.

equivalent of that fov would be what, like a 15 35 77 combo? I like the sound of that

I used to say the 18-135 and a 55-300.. then I ended up with a 16-50, and a 50-135, and a 10-20, and a couple plastic primes, and etc..

I probably get most use out of the 55-300 though. It is reasonably sharp, lightweight, and fairly small for the rather large focal range.

oh and a Sigma 105mm macro for.. well.. macro use.

If I go FF, I have considered a 15-30, 28-105, and using the 55-300 (cropping for vignetting or using in crop mode) since I'm adverse to bulk and heft. If anyone offers a proper 24-105 f/4 and/or a 70-200 f/4 in K mount, I'd likely spring for those.

The more expensive the camera system, the fewer lenses I can see myself buying/using. I can buy 2 quality lenses in crop for the cost of 1 quality lens in FF.

Bass-ackwards on the FF Spotmatic, Imp. On an APS-C that would be more like about 40, 80 an' 200.

I surely do wish I could've afforded a 15 back in my Spotty days.
