BIF With DA200mm - quite a bit of cropping

I did not bring in my 300mmF:4. I did that with DA200mm with quite a bit of cropping this morning while it was taking off

Thanks for stopping by.
This shows the cropping done as I was pretty far away

Nice focus. I see the Blue Herons occasionally too.

You know.. your photo just demonstrated that you are a great bird shooter.. Like @sergysergy said "great panning". I believe people who crib about AF capabilities do not want to do this and somehow end up blaming the camera's AF capabilities.

@shardulm, you know what they say about a poor workman! @danielchtong has demonstrated nicely that there is nothing wrong with the kit in the right hands, great shot!

Thanks shardulm & Tekmongoose, for the positive comments. I come from an old background of only relying manual focus even for BIF images

Overall I think I did not push DA*200mm hard enough and majority of my many many BIF shots were done with A*300mm as shown here.

Why? 300mm is just longer and it (200mm) is short for long range shots. Also the newer dslr with reputedly better AF should help too. Maybe because I have been relying on manual focus and there has less need to upgrade AF dslr (the vintage K20D).

That is a great photo, with the heavy cropping! I especially like how you caught the wings, really a nice job!

Thanks.
It is bad time of the year. They are all gone until late spring.

What, to me, is even more interesting is the shape of the neck -- great blue herons (as with other herons and egrets) nearly always have their necks crooked into an S-shape ~except~ sometimes when just starting to take off or sometimes when just about to touch down in landing.

LOL Like this when it is ready to take off in another second (it bent backward its neck ahead of that)

Taken with A*300mmm F:4

And this is another one showing a (sort of) straight neck (as it is about to touch down) as well as a crooked neck (or two, including the egret) -

[F* 300/4.5, I think, cropped only moderately IIRC]

:-)

You must be pretty close to them given their size within the frame. That was a good catch on your part

I get to photograph a Blue Heron quite a bit. Two seem to be residents at our local wetlands lake. For a large bird their lift off is very silent. There is almost no noise from the wing beats at all.
These two are examples of extreme cropping. Incidently, they are usually called a White Faced Heron in New Zealand.
