K-5 II or K-70 as a second DSLR camera?

Hi to all!

I'm proud owner of K-5 II for over two years and now I'm considering to buy second DSLR. Since I like K-5 II, I'm thinking to go with that model again, but now with K-70 on the market, I'm thinking are there (and what are) any advantages of K-70? On K-5 II I like sturdy design, top lcd, long battery life and, of course, image quality. Also, 2nd hand K-5 II is almost US$200-300 lower than a new K-70.

Or perhaps it's best to go with something that you already know.

Thanks!

A k-70 will have better IQ. Don't know about better AF, about the same I think. It also has an articulating screen and wifi connectivity better sr and sensor shift anti-aliassing. It has a smaller battery and no top lcd. I would keep my money in my pocket and wait/ save up for the K-3 II successor. You can keep de k5 II as back up.

why not a K-3/K-3II and the K-5II becomes the second/backup body?

Personally, I'm not making any decisions until I see what {if anything} happens before/during Photokina.

In your position, I would see having both cameras use the same battery type as a definite advantage.

Top of the line K-3II, Pixel shift, 27 selectable focus points, 8 FPS, 24 Mp, built in GPS
K-70 - 11 selectable focus points, pixels shift , 6 fps, 24 MP, no built in GPS but built in flash
K-5ii - 11 selectable focus points, no pixel shift, 7 fps,

Just a brief synopsis, from memory.

The K-70 gets you Pixels shift and 24 MP. The K-3ii still has some serious improvements over the K-70. But, if you're not interested in the GPS a K-70 might be for you., faster burst rate and more accurate, faster focus, (and a lot of people legitimately aren't) a K-70 might be for you.

As K-3 owner, the only thing holding me back from using a K-70 as my second body would be because though I'd really like to try out the pixel shift function, is the lack of GPS, and inferior AF.

Why am I not recommending the K-3? Two reasons... no pixel shift, and it's not KAF4 compatible. Both the K-70 and K-3II will be compatible with all the electronic aperture lenses Pentax release in the future, the first being the new 55-300 PLM. To me, at this point buying a camera that is not KAF4 compatible will backfire on you, as soon as Pentax comes out with a KAF4 only lens that isn't backwards compatible with o older bodies. If they release something you like in KAF4, like the new faster focusing 55-300 PLM, you'll have to buy a new body when you buy the lens.

Tha K-3ii and K-70 get you ahead of the game on that one.

Here are the points I considered when I bought my second body (K-5iis, my first one was K-5ii).
1. Same battery
2. Same button placements
3. Same interface/everything

My intent: I wanted to have 2 bodies to be able to shoot wide and tele at once for events. With 2 K-5ii I have 16-50 and 50-135 mounted and ready all the time. I put my 60-250 on the K-01 and keep that as a back up tele for unimportant but candid captures.
Obviously my intent drove my decision to have an exact same 2nd body as it kept me from having to switch the operating between 2 different camera interfaces when I am shooting events.

If your intent is to have a back up.. then I believe the difference in the button layouts and interface wont matter much as you will be using only 1 body at a time. I would still weigh in the compatible battery type though. Pixel shift is something you may want to have for sure. So like @normhead mentioned (keeping the KAF4 compatibility in perspective) K-70 or K-3ii are your best bets.
If you can live with the interface, button layouts and battery differences then K-70 it would be.
If not then you have arrived.

PS: K-5ii, K-5iis and K-01 appear to have exact same sensors too. That makes my PP WF and file sizes consistent as well. Another advantage worth mentioning.

I think what you mean as 'back up' should also be considered. If you are not shooting under pressure, and just want another camera 'in case' then getting a k-70 and pushing the k-5II to back up makes some sense. Or getting a K-3II, or K-3 and using the k-5II as backup.

However, if by backup you mean a second camera that might be used in the same shoot with a different lens or as a back up in case of failure during a shoot then getting an identical camera as your back up makes sense. As an example say you are shooting a gig or a wedding or anything else that requires you to deliver. If the camera fails you go into panic mode and then having to grab a camera with different controls and abilities just compounds that panic. Far better to grab an identical body and just keep shooting.

I guess I'm trying to point out the difference between a 'back up' and a second camera.

Seems it might depend a lot on your shooting needs and priorities and subjects, e.g. action, landscapes, general, street, travel.

I have the K5IIs/K5II combo and love it (same everything, etc.), but that's me. Maybe I don't know what I'm missing with the others and will upgrade at some point. For you it seems getting a K5IIs might make sense if you like your K5II.

Thanks for replies. Backup, from my point of view, is second camera. That's the reason why I'm thinking of k-5II.

Very good point made here!

When I bought my K3, I've kept my mint K10 in case something happens to the K3. I've not used the K10 since the K3 arrived; but it's there if needed.

I went from a K-50 to a K-3; I kept the K-50 as my manual camera - it has my Tamron 72B pretty much permanently-mounted on it....
