For the first two (from 2007) I used an *ist-DS, while for the others (from 2008-2010) I used a K20D.
For lenses, for the first three I likely used a Tokina AT-X 80-400/4.5-5.6, for the fourth I used an F*300/4.5, and for the last two I used an SMC DA 55-300/4-5.8.
All of these are screw-drive lenses that can go on "impromptu AF hunting expeditions", of course, so I likely would have had them pre-set for a focal plane just behind the expected subject plane distance, which would have helped in getting a quick focus lock.
EDIT: By the way, Paul, these were New England humpback whales, and they typically show mostly white flippers above, all white flippers below, and a body that is mostly dark -- if these had been East Australian humpbacks (which perhaps you've seen), they likely would have shown mostly dark flippers above, and a body that is dark above but with a lot more white below (IIRC).
