Jump to fuji or not?

Do this...

Take your equivilant focal lengths and desired lenses, check the weight of each and make a system list Camera + Lens(s) weight. It typically turns out, each system (camera + lens) tend to weigh about the same same when you put good glass on the camera.

DSLRs have an advantage with battery life. Aslo, OVF via the Mirror is low tech, but works all the time. OVF if great, but not perfect YET.

All in all, each system has advantages. Clearly, we like Pentax, but only you can identify what you need.

I looked at the Fuji system a few years ago. I was reassessing my equipment configuration and about to reinvest. At the time I sold off my K-100D Super, my FA glass (35 f/2 & 50 f/1.4) an 18-55 kit lens, a DA 50-200, DA 16-45 f/4 (which is a great lens BTW), an SMC A 28 f/2.8, and SMC A 50 f/2. I tried a friend's Nikon for an afternoon and had tested the Fuji in my local camera shop.

Travelling light is an obsession for me. A former Infantry officer; I want tough, functional, exceptionally performing Spartan warrior worthy equipment. The Fuji bodies were sleek but I opted for a more rugged K-5II and the HD DA 21/40/70 stack of pancakes, a Joby wrist strap and a Domke F-5XB Rugged-Wear (weather sealed) bag. When it comes to the 3 Pancakes the 21 is the most used, the 40 is the most versatile and the 70 is the most loved (as it delivers pixie dust in portraits).

Fuji is a great system that you will enjoy for years. Pentax Limited glass you'll treasure for a lifetime.

An small u4/3 system can compliment your K-mount gear. Lenses can be very small, sharp, and are lower priced. Olympus M10 bodies can be bought at very low prices. The trade off, when compared to Fuji, may be a drop in dynamic range because a u4/3 sensor is smaller. You may only this in very hard lighting situations where contrast is strong.

Otherwise, why not jump to Fuji if you like it and can afford it?

There are few gems on that Fuji system which are out of reach with competing APS-C systems. One is 14/2.8 which is the closest thing to Zeiss Distagon 21mm on FF DSLR there is in any crop system. And High ISO performance of those x-trans Fuji bodies is close to K-1 level.

Hi MJKOSKI here is a balanced lens comparison:

- The M43 14mm f/2.8 is roughly 17.5mm on APS C. Yes it's a little wider than a DA 21.
- The difference in DOF between APS C and M43 is roughly 2/3 of a stop. The DA 21 on APS C has a slight advantage for DOF (M43 would have a comparable DOF of f/3.5).

All in all - I'd say the lens comparison is a wash.

If you like an EVF, don't mind focus by wire and like the dials Fuji has, then I would go for it. They have nice lenses -- fast apertures and quite sharp (although quite expensive).

I guess the other thing is whether you might want, in your heart, to eventually go with a full frame camera. Fuji isn't going to offer that any time soon and the current X Mount lenses aren't full frame compatible (not sure if the mount is either).

Check new fuji lenses 23/2.0 and 35/2.0. They are small, lightweight, wr, fast focusing and not so expensive. You can also get good price on x-t1 now. I am happy owner of x-t1 for two years and it's really joy to use.

Olympus E-M1 MK II is now on firesale. It would be a very nice camera. Or an OM-D E-m5 (mk i or ii) would be another good one with small lenses and a pretty good image quality.

I know nothing about Fuji, but what a balanced and informative thread. I doubt that you could get a discussion like this on any other system-based photography site.

I think on another thread it was pointed out that most Pentax users have at least some exposure to another brand and are reasonably well informed about the competing models. I would like to think this is because we are discerning but it may have a lot to do with Pentax not having quite the same options as some competitors (no full frame for years for example). Of course that cuts both ways - if we try something else we come running home often because some of the things that are uniquely Pentax are still uniquely Pentax.

I'm kinda thinking a XT1 sorta fits quite well as a second camera to a K-1..... mostly when size matters (and $ not so much).... I wouldn't compare XT1 true hi ISO with the K-1 though.....more K5 ish.

My advice is if it excites you give it a try...... it's not like you deciding on a life partner.... (oops....bad analogy.... we swap those these days regularly as well.... 6years is about the average....all abit Kx ish realy)
