Hey Thanks. I will try and tinker with it tonight. I have nothing to loose at this point.

I just had Doug Kerr measure a Canon switch. It is both too large width and length. Plus it is too thick. I've got a Pentax P&S on the way to me. I'll see what size the switch is in it.

Because the Pentax CS-205 remote cable release has a 2-phase shutter release, I took one apart to see if it also had one of those small switches. No dice, it uses long metal blades to do the contacts.

Yep, all the remotes I checked used the three blade reed style switch.
Pentax had to have used that switch in other cameras of that time period.
I'll keep checking till I find it.

no joy

Glad to see this thread still alive - surely there must be a fix, somewhere. But if one did find a suitable donor, does the panel think that one should attempt to desolder the old switch from the existing ribbon and replace in-situ, or just go ahead and replace the whole ribbon/switch assembly. The former means a high chance of disaster, given my cack-handed soldering technique, the latter means more disassembly than may be convenient. I've only gone so far as to pop the top off so far, which is no effort at all.

Where that ribbon goes, exactly, and how it terminates, I haven't wanted to check - so far. Is it an easy one to access?

I removed my switch from the ribbon. The ribbon is taped down with a very powerful two sided tape. I was afraid it would rip trying get it loose.
I'm still looking for a suitable switch. I may have to see if one of the P&S cameras have one that will work.

I did. I also tried contact cleaner. The switch had no first stage. And the second stage clicked, but no circuit was completed.

BTW, you the Alan Chan from RFF?

Rangefinder forum.

Anyway. I finally got a part number for the electrical two stage switch in the DS. It is shipping UPS tomorrow. Hopefully by Friday I can report success in getting the camera going again.

Pentax parts department. A rep helped me get the non consumer allowed part number. I then was able to order it. It should be here by Friday.
I found out that the lady in the parts department has no technical knowledge. You have to know the part number or you are SOL.

That rep is a new member here, dorianb. Drop him a PM.
