New Used K10D

Hi Folks!

I'm new here and just picked up a 2nd hand K10D off of ebay.

Anything I should take a look at or watch out for with the new (to me) camera?

I did a shutter check, and it's only been actuated 350 times or so.

THanks,

John

Hi John;

Shoot in RAW mode. Check the firmware version. The latest should be v 1.0.3.

Congrats John. Try each mode and go through the menus. You may not know every quirk until you've got more lenses (beware the LBA... and if you don't know what this is, it's better you don't!)

Ben, I think you mean 1.30. Non?

Thanks guys. I will check the firmware.

The guy that auctioned the camera "threw in" a sigma 28-80mm lens. So right now, I'm blaming the glass for any lack of photo clarity . Time to look at lenses. Can't wait.

You can start with the kit lens (18-55mm). It is decent lens which you can get cheap here on marketplace or on Ebay. I have Sigma 17-70mm and I simply love this lens. Great walk-around lens. But it depends if you want to go with zooms or build prime lens collection.

Seeing as there are no brick and mortar shops that do Pentax here on Maui, I am looking at the ebay offerings as well.

I guess a prime and a higher side zoom will come next.

Don't go by the shutter activations as shown - I'm about to roll my counter a second time now and could easily claim it has just a few activations.

Might want to check the serial number with Pentax, perhaps they registered it and you can get an idea on date of purchase.

Check the camera for any faults now - shoot away, RAW as Ben suggested, pixel peep a few of your images (examine the image closely for any problems not caused by human error), look for stress fractures on the tripod or camera strap mounts, check for dust on your sensor, examine the flash hot-shoe for any damage or loseness, inspect everything!

Thanks for the info, Frogroast. This may turn into a case of "more I know, the less I want to know"

That PhotoMe application says that it had 380 shutter actuations and was manufactured in Sept of 2007. It smells new. The wife said maybe the person that bought it just had it long enough to figure out that it's heavy, got lots of buttons, and might have been too much camera for his needs....

But I still will take a look at the pixels.

Thanks,

John
