Missing in-store display

So, walked in on Henry's in hamilton yesterday, which is one of the biggest retailer in Ontario.
Couldn't find a section for Pentax.

There were Nikon, Canon, Fuji, sony, heck, olympus was there, i think...and sigma/tamron.
No pentax.

The sales person was confused when i asked for Pentax. Like, he wasn't even sure what that is. Pentax? hmm...no..thats...fuji...hmmm.

Is that just in hamilton henry's? . Cuz..thats depressing. Get on your game, Pentax.

I live in Ottawa. Henry's was once my retailer of choice for Pentax gear, and I did receive good service and assistance. Their nearby store - about 5 minute's drive from my home - carried a small but decent Pentax stock 'over there in the corner'. They had four outlets in the Ottawa area, I think. One closed recently. Of the remaining three stores, only their downtown location seems to have any Pentax branded gear, and only a few items at that.

Seems they replaced Pentax with drones!

They will order in Pentax gear, but most of it is 'special order' which means an order cannot be cancelled.

I am considering buying a K-70 soon and emailed Henry's last week to ask why their website shows the K-70 as a pre-order item and asking when they expected stock in. I got a reply saying the following:

"The K-70 camera body is a special order item and not stocked in any of our locations.

The item usually ships in 3-4 weeks assuming our supplier has stock. Sorry we are unable to guarantee delivery times for any special order product and once placed, the order cannot be cancelled or returned. "

Needless to say I will be buying my K-70 from another Canadian store now. I have bought a fair amount of stuff from Henry's over the past 3-4 years but unless they are considerably cheaper than the competition my business will be going elsewhere.

Wake up Henry's, you've really dropped the ball here!

Henry's in St. John's carried Pentax a couple of years ago. I was able to handle a K-5II and bought it as a result. I ordered the HD DA 21, HD DA 40 and HD DA 70 at this store as well. Each order was prepaid in full yet always took 10 or more weeks to arrive. The Henry's distribution model was terrible. I reached out to Pentax Canada for help with my HD DA 70 order. Henry's hadn't actually sent the order to Pentax Canada until 4 weeks after I had prepaid in full. That was the last straw for me with Henry's special orders.

About a year ago their Pentax inventory in St. John's which had thinned considerably - evaporated. No more Pentax at Henry's in St. John's. Last month they shut their doors. No more Henry's in St. John's either. Karma perhaps?

In Nova Scotia this past August I visited the Henry's store in Dartmouth Crossing asking to see a K-3II. I spoke with a salesperson who asked me "why would anyone shoot Pentax?" I was also told by the young gentleman that; "Pentax is least innovative camera manufacturer around and use outdated technology" - he also suggested that I should look at Canon or Nikon and that they "had stopped carrying Pentax because no one buys it".

I was on vacation; with the cash in hand to buy a K-3II and I walked away. If the lad had listened and bothered to tell me that the nearby Bayers Lake store had the K-3II in stock; I would have went there and bought it (I didn't discover this until arriving back home in NL through the Henry's website). Since the impulse has passed - I will most likely be picking up a K-3II on a Black Friday or Boxing Day Sale - more money left in my pocket - perhaps I should send the clerk in Henry's a thank-you card for helping my dollars go further.

The Pentax wall display at my local Henry’s store has been replaced by Fuji. Fuji has done an excellent job with their X series cameras and I think they’ve already overtaken Pentax. It’s so disappointing to see almost none Ricoh/Pentax marketing presence in retail and dwindling brand recognition over the years. It’s been five years since Ricoh bought Pentax and we have yet to see any improvement in terms of Pentax marketing.

It is just Hamilton Henry's I guess as the other Henry's I frequently go have Pentax on display. Not everything but some of the stuff... at least.

Missing in store display

I have been ordering all my Pentax gear from McBain Camera in Edmonton (K1, grip, 31,21,15,43,77). All orders at my door in less than 20Hrs here in Victoria thanks to WestJet. You pay GST but no PST. They have a good selection and stock.

I live in Denver and often walk by the downtown building where Pentax US has their office. To the best of my knowledge you could not buy a Pentax camera or lens in the state of Colorado if you tried. Heck, I just looked on their website Ricoh Imaging Americas Corporation and I can't even find a "dealer locator". I get 100% of my gear online.

If you want mainstream gear that you can walk into a big box store and touch, Pentax is not for you.

Had... recently they moved to Ricohs's main HQ in NY. They're also going to be handling customer service internally now, which is awesome! It was outsourced before.

I recently took a photo class locally and this was the first time in many years where the instructor and even some of the students mentioned Pentax cameras. One of them even had a Pentax! That's the first time I've seen this in years, and I've been doing those classes pretty regularly. They even knew about the K-1. It's definitely increased brand awareness which I think is great!

That said, I don't think Ricoh wants to move to a B&M sales model. There's still lots of work to be done to make their products more accessible.

Fredericks of St. Catherines has a K-70 on their shelves at the moment, and may have a used one turning up soon, a full frame Nikon user wanting to downgrade, but in the end, couldn't take the low light noise hit. Thinking of turning it in on an upgrade FF body. I stopped in last week to pick up straps for bags, filters etc. He also has a used DA*300 and a DA* 50-135. They are both between $100-1200 dollars and practically new. And he's not related to me nor am I going to make any money from this.

When I was looking at D FA 28-105s last week both Mississauga Stores and their and their downtown store had them in stock, so they obviously have some stock in the buildings.

I was in one last Wednesday. He had an assortment of old K-mount lenses for sale, none of them was particularly interesting, I bought his SMC Supertak 50 1.4 last time I was in. And people were bringing film...and picking up film. I think I'll visit again over Christmas..."let's do the time warp again." The two film customers were both 20 somethings, and full of enthusiasm. There is hope for the future.
