I seldom shoot JPEG, but when I have, that has not been my experience.

Seeing the full spread of images on the video, I was surprised at how close the cameras were to each other. As mentioned above, I generally shoot RAW, but in one specific situation, the in-camera JPEG was superior to what I could do with the RAW in Lightroom. See below from the K10D:

No out-of-camera processing.

Yes. Use of the term "pleasing" is the key. A completely meaningless term except to the one being pleased.

We had this conversation overlapping some of the same issues earlier this year. It started from the premise that participants did sometimes use in camera jpgs, whether or not it was their preferred mode.

Reading through these posts made me realize that I always feel like I need to know of, and have in the kitchen cabinet, a good brand of instant coffee.

Nescafe Classico isn't bad. I get this instant coffee appreciation from my dad, who - if he wanted coffee - he HAD TO have it as soon as water could be coaxed to boil. I like a fancy coffee now and again, but I'd rather spend the money on another lens.

I prefer mine "natural," not "vivid," too.

What jumped out at me was the narrow source of opinion of what was "bad" or "good" so far as the aesthetics of tone and color is concerned.
As far as I could tell his source of opinion was confined to people narrowly involved in photography in the technical sense.

It would have been interesting to know the opinion of an art class learning, for instance, traditional oil painting technique.

I liked his "review"
primarily because he was upfront about it being a subjective small sample appraisal of the viewers' image preference

everybody likes what they like and that is as it should be

I have always thought it mattered more what I liked
other opinions are interesting but not necessary

a person should create for themselves not a consensus

as far as jpegs go...pentax seems to have made a qualitative shift after the k01

my ooc jpegs from the k01 need almost no post

however the jpegs from my k50 and k3s thrive in post
out of camera they tend to be pleasant but bland
but are excellent material for enhancement

crust-

I haven't been able to either
I just set my bodies back to their default settings

it seems that contrast is the key
often the color i'm wanting follows on

certain images seem overexposed to my eye

at any rate the pictures i'm going to use immediately are run through post and I get what I want (usually)

Thanks, but that's a bummer as I was hoping I could save a lot of time by staying with my existing photo processing flow.

These are just some snaps with in camera jpeg, but I thought they were pretty decent quality. Would they have been better with RAW and post processing? Maybe so, but I was on vacation and didn't want to spend too much time processing images after this trip.
