Pentax IR conversion?

Does anyone know if it is possible to get a Pentax dslr converted to IR (infrared-only) photography? Most places (lifepixels.com, etc.) only convert Nikon & Canon. I would love to buy a used Pentax dslr and get it converted. But, I don't know if anyone can do the conversion.

Any suggestions???

Send it to Pentax in Golden Colorado. They do it. That way no worries.

I know this is a pretty old thread, but has anyone had Pentax do this conversion before? How much did it cost? I have a spare *ist DL as a backup that would be great for an IR conversion.

A no to your question, but my last contact with Lifepixel, was that they have NO plans to convert Pentax Dslr's.

I will inquire tomorrow, would like to have it done to my K110D since it needs servicing anyway and is out of warranty.

Well... that's what I was asking. I read about it in another thread on the forums.

It seems like Buddha is our go to guy for contacting various companies.

Shutterbug Magazine Jan 2008

Subject article on page 88 and continued on page 154 indicates that the Pentax K100D Super can easily be modified to be Infrared (IR) capable by simply using a Hoya RM-72 filter (expensive) or a Cokin 89B aka 007 (cheap version) without any camera mods. I assume the K110 and K100 are similar but haven't tried it yet with mine - another reason for the K100D/K110 to be selling out.......... Ken.

Also check out the thread on "infrared photography" - some good examples of what you can do with the Hoya filter and Pentax DSLRs

Actually the filter option is the cheap way, like $50 for the Hoya version, but getting a camera stripped out for only IR shooting would be nice.

The K110D/K100D have better response with IR because of the sensor so they make good candidates for this process.

The AA filter is not permanently fixed and can be removed easily, if you managed to disassemble the camera that far. I did this to my own DS some weeks ago and it is possible. Basically you have to remove all the plastic shells of the body, the large circuit board at the rear, then you can extract the CCD easily. But I have no idea where to get the perfect fit IR filter for it (dimension & thickness).

If you are serious about getting your Pentax converted, pm me and I'll get you together with a guy that does IR conversions on pentax cameras. I know he does at least the ds and k100d, and he may do more. I just picked up an IR only *st ds from this fella.

IR Conversion

Spencer's Camera (Spencer's Camera - Digital Camera Infrared IR Conversions, Modifications & IR Photography - Home) claims to convert a wide variety of cameras including all Pentax DSLRs. They will install either a 720nm or a 830nm filter over the sensor. Since they are local to me I am going to take one of my spare bodies (either a *istDS or the K100) to them within the next week. Also Jim Chen (Digital Infrared at Jim Chen photography) does conversions (720nm only) and is a bit cheaper.
