Bingo! p.84!! If you are still looking at that picture on your camera it will be the number beside the +/- icon. Looking at the picture...line below, should be the third value to the right. That will answer one of my suspicions.

Here's a sample I took quickly..it's white vases against a white background...looks grey to me..
The light meter reads everything as Zone V gray. White subjects require user intervention,

Dave: Even with the under exposure and the resizing look at the big jump in detail between the shots! Look at the edges especially in the long tapered portion of the necks--very interesting, huh?
I know you weren't directing the comment at me, but yeah the differences are huge!

I'm looking at the .pdf version 84 on my page indicator...the actual page number says 86. Oops!

Ok, so we know it's not EV. On p.161 there instructions to adjust the EV. As the retailer at your store said, the camera will deliberately underexpose a shot, but I never imagined it would be to this degree. I am surprised. I will test when I get a chance with my K100D. I would try shooting with your EV set at 0.5 (if you are going up 1/2 stops) or 0.7 (if you are going by 1/3 stops). Then go up from there.

Alvin! Tried it..and it works....makes a huge difference....you are brilliant. Though it does make the image a little noisier.

Hmmm...what does the info say now about the picture? I'm guessing that it might have lengthened the shutter speed? SLR's don't operate like point and shoots, that's for sure. This confirms it. LOL!

Thanks to everyone for their assistance....

As I say, I'm soooo glad I joined this brilliant site. Info now though is ISO 100, speed 1/60, f4.0 - this compares to ISO 100, 1/125 @ f4.5. How does that sound? Shutter speed, as you indicated, has lengthed considerably.

Hmmm...looks about right. If you don't mind, can you send me a copy of the original Panny shot and the two Pentax shots to alvin.villanueva"at"hotmail.com? I'd like to do some pixel peeping. I'm curious about the noise.

No problems. I do have to apologize, it's almost midnight here and I get up at 5:30 am on weekdays. I'll "sleep" on it and give you some feedback tomorrow.

Mind if I post a link to the shots here? I can host the pictures off of my server.
