pulling images off the SD card on a PC - ???

Hey there, I sent a k100D to a friend in the Republic of Georgia, not realizing getting the pictures off the camera would be tricky. What program is best to use for pulling images off the SD card on a PC?

If you put the SD card in a computer, you can copy over the images that way.

Is your friend shooting in Raw format? What software are they trying to use?

Yikes, yes. I set it up to shoot RAW. I don't know what software they are using. Maybe I need to recommend switching to jpeg. Figured RAW would give her more to work with. I just sent her the link for PENTAX PHOTO Browser 3 at Software Downloads : Support & Service | RICOH IMAGING Should that work for opening images or best to advise switching to Jpegs?

They should be able to download and install the RAW image codec for Windows, which will allow them to see the files (Download Microsoft Camera Codec Pack (6.3.9721.0) from Official Microsoft Download Center).

Two thoughts. Is she using a card reader? If so, she should be able to insert the reader with the card already in it, and Windows should open it up and let you copy/paste the files to the local drive, and then yes, she could use the Pentax Software you sent a link on, or any software that understand the RAW format. If she's trying to plug the camera in directly, she may need to switch the USB mode on the Camera side. I know on the K3II, there are two USB modes, and depending on how it is set, Windows will respond differently. One mode the camera is just seen like any other USB storage device, and in the other mode, it is seen as a picture device, and Windows won't behave the same way.

Just downloaded a k100d manual, and it does have two transfer modes for the USB - PC and PC-F - one is meant to talk to printers, the other to the PC, so if direct cable attachment, this may be an issue.

Your friend could also download a copy of FastStone Image Viewer which has a decent suite of editing tools and allows for batch conversions / image processing.

The Microsoft Camera Codec Pack for Windows 7 should show you the thumbnails from K100D RAW files.

Thanks everyone, I am having her install the codec first. Then the FastStone Image Viewer. She lives in the Republic of Georgia and is a translator. Thanks again for your help!

You can try the Windows 8.1 codec (64bit operating system: Download Update for Microsoft Camera Codec Pack for Windows 8.1 for x64-based Systems (KB2859675) from Official Microsoft Download Center or 32bit operating system: Download Update for Microsoft Camera Codec Pack for Windows 8.1 (KB2859675) from Official Microsoft Download Center ). There isn't one specifically for Windows 10, but it worked on my computer.
