I did read the manual - I want to save files in a more indexed format rather than as an example _IGP5599.DNG.
Am I missing something.

I'm missing something - what do you mean by "better indexed"?

The typical Pentax will create a new folder each day you shoot and name the files like what you listed. Importing these into Lightroom or something that keeps a daily folder structure will keep the names from overlapping at the full path.
