K3ii replacement 36mp?

Just as the title asks...do you think the K3ii replacement will have 36mp's, or any more for that matter? I know mps aren't everything, but I'm thinking about the ability to crop images and still retain amazing quality.
Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

I don't think it'll jump that high without a dip in noise performance, at least for now. The new generation of 24mp sensors seems to be quite a bit better than what's in the K-3, so I'd be willing to bet that's what we'll see in the next crop flagship.

Sensors in competing Sony and Nikon cameras also tend to foreshadow what Pentax will use, since they generally don't get exclusive access to chips.

If Sony made one I'm sure it would be considered. But no one makes one so, no. The next flagship will have a 24 MP sensor. Probably the same one in the a6300/6500.

Does anyone have any info on just how much better in noise performance the new gen 24Mp sensors are than the sensor in the K-3 II...and also how they compare with the sensor in the K-1?

Cheers,
Terry

Thanks for the great responses. I wonder how big of a difference there will be between the kp and the k-3ii replacement? I guess autofocus performance and high ISO performance?

If it has a new processor it will have 4K video.

I agree with Adam, regarding 24mp sensor. I think Ricoh will build the next generation K-iii off the new KP, targeted at advanced amateur / semi-professional photographers with high iso capabilities, improved af, dual card slots, articulating screen similar to the K-1, etc. I don't think it will encroach on the K-1's 36mp, Ricoh will reserve that for their flag-ship camera.

Taking a more conservative approach, I suspect it will be a blend of K-3II, KP, and K-1.

With the KP sensor.. same or slightly tweaked ISO performance. More along the lines of deeper buffer and faster burst rate. More AF points is a given. Probably same tethering as in K-1. Improved WIFI. Not a monumental jump from the K-3 II, but a significant enough one to make you upgrade over the K-3 II (should you have one).

Remember the jump from K-5 II to K-3 ? It was very sizable but not overwhelmingly more.

I think that is the same type of difference we'll see going from K-3 II to K-[whatever]

Video. That' something I never use on my camera. I should probably play with the video on my k3. Considering the responses, I wonder how much of a difference there is between k1/36mps and k3/24mps? I've read on the forum here that there isn't that great of a difference between the two.
It's silly, but I'm contemplating buying a new toy and I just can't decide.

Spoke with Pentax rep on Wed. He indicated continued production of K3ii for foreseeable future - I also handled a pre-production KP
Very nice little camera. Granted Canada is a long way from Japan...

As you said and most likely.

To the OP: And of course this has been discussed at length in some other threads.

Have you considered a K1 which already offers 36mp and some other wee bits and bobs too.

Medium format will not be surpased by FF will not be surpased by APS-C in pixel count.
Pixel pitch will be getting too small anyways. Positively spoken, Pentax can concentrate on lenses, AF, and some other unique camera/lens features.

I think the main upgrades in a K-3 II replacement will be:

- More AF points, more sensitive in low light (-3,5 Ev), smarter scene detection and AF point selection, on sensor PDAF in addition to a traditional PDAF sensor.
- Better high ISO jpeg processing (like KP)
- Deeper buffer, faster burst
- 1/8000s mechanical shutter and 1/24000s electronic shutter (actually controllable)
- 95% likely 24 Mp, 5% likely a small increase to 28-30-32 Mp, 0% likely 36 Mp or more
- 4K video 30p
- Reintroduced video SR
- A third control wheel
- K-1 style thetering
- Improved cold resistance to -20'C
- Several cool new features few of us knew we wanted. One example is synchronization and file merging with a Theta S in the flash shoe. Another is STF emulation.
- Built in flash this time, not built in GPS/Astrotracer
