I am feeling worried about my Pentax k10D.

I put my Pentax smc 35-80mm lens on and my k10D says it's a manual focus lens. My 50mm lens works fine.
I did put a old slide duplicater the uses a screw mount adapter. Could this mess up my k10D connectors?

How can I fix this problem? Is the lens or the camera?

Could be a loose connection- try cleaning to mounts in both the camera and lens.

When I put the lens on my k10D. The camera ask me for the focal length. I never did that before.

Have you cleaned the contacts on both the camera body and the lens as Adam suggested?

Yes but I just used a dry paper towel. I will use a damp towel next.

OK Do you have any wet lens wipes? The type with isopropyl alcohol? Or do you have a bottle of isopropyl alcohol and some cotton buds? They will do a better job of cleaning away any muck and oily residue. If you don't, then a micro-fibre cloth is also good, as it tends to grab hold of the dirt. Otherwise, a slightly damp cotton rag or dry lens wipes will do the trick. The problem with paper towels is they tend to leave a lot of fibres behind. Just make sure you get the mount and contacts on both the camera and lens as clean as possible...

I've had that happen before. I just turn the camera off, release the lens and mount it again. When I turn the camera back on, the problem is solved.

I cleaned it with a damp towel. It didn't work. I will try a microfiber cloth next. Other lenses work so it must be the lens. The lens contacts look clean to me.

Is the aperture ring set to "A"?

Yep, but my camera doesn't even know the lens size.

Hmmm? My SMC Pentax 35-80mm is a manual focus lens so what you are seeing would be perfectly normal for me. It's a "Pentax-A" lens. If I had shake reduction on, my K10D would as for the focal length.

Did you turn AF back on, after using the manual slide copier?

Do you have another autofocus Pentax lens you can try on the camera? Maybe the problem only happens with the 35-80mm AF lens.

I tried everything and it still doesn't work. I guess I will have to use my 50mm 1.4 lens to take pictures of my new puppy.

I should upgrade my SLR to something newer?

If the camera body has none of the same problems with the f/1.4 50mm lens, then the problem definitely is NOT with the camera body.

Perhaps the zoom is developing some issues.

Yes, the problem is likely with the lens.

Have you used this lens on a different Pentax autofocus camera body (whether film or digital) and had its focal length recognized properly and also find its auto focusing working correctly?
