Do you have any wet lens wipes? The type with isopropyl alcohol? Or do you have a bottle of isopropyl alcohol and some cotton buds? They will do a better job of cleaning away any muck and oily residue. If you don't, then a micro-fibre cloth is also good, as it tends to grab hold of the dirt. Otherwise, a slightly damp cotton rag or dry lens wipes will do the trick. The problem with paper towels is they tend to leave a lot of fibres behind. Just make sure you get the mount and contacts on both the camera and lens as clean as possible...
