Pentax K20D different finger grip designs

Curious if anyone knows why there are some K20D (and I've seen the same on K10D) the finger grip design is different - if the ones with indentation was an early production or for a certain market (Europe & Asia perhaps) . Majority have the straight grip area. Pictures below.

One with indentation on the grip.

Most have this straight grip area.

Thank you so much pjv. Now I know that it was an option in Japan. I recently purchased one with the indented grip and noticed when setting time zone it was set to Tokyo time zone so it was a Japan model.

Interesting. I wonder this is where the idea for interchangeable grips on the KP came from? That option would have addressed the main criticism I have about my K10D--that its grip is uncomfortably shallow. My hands aren't all that large, but I find myself grasping the right side of the camera with just my fingertips. By contrast, my Samsung GX-20 (K20D clone) has a slightly chunkier grip. It's not quite as pronounced as the variant above, but it puts my fingers in a more natural position to comfortably grip the camera. The only downside is the shape of the GX-20's grip, and its entire bottom plate, prevents me from using my K10D's battery grip with it.
