Sony will keep the best sensor for themselves, and give the crappy sensors to Pentax

QuoteQuote:
Imaging Resource interviewed Mr. Kenji Tanaka and Mr. Yojiro Joe Asai from Sony (UPDATE: IR removed the interview). They didn’t spill out any info about future specific products but they gave a more general idea of what kind of tech they are working on:
  • No outsourcing of best Sony sensors: “The sensor is a custom [design, meaning that] only Sony can use these sensors, and our strength is our in-house technology.”
Probably it’s very interesting to hear the fact that Sony will not outsource the sensor they use on their own cameras. Which kind will give Nikon a very hard time!

Hasn't it been like this for a while? Keeping the latest and greatest to themselves, and only making it available to others once newer chips are released?

Read : This is their custom made sensor for Sony who make full sense.
The Standard sensor are available and each company can ask for some customization I read before.

The funny thing is there is so little difference these days, any advantage they might actually have, is eaten up by the processing chain. They can control what sensor is sold, they can't control what others do with it.

Sony had announced a bit over a year ago, that they were making the image sensor business somewhat more independent, so as to foster additional growth opportunities. This recent statement does appear to emphasis that Sony's image sensor business is indeed a very captive enterprise.

Sony said the move was part of the company's push to give autonomy to its business units to accelerate decision-making and make them more accountable for their profitability.
Also, when taken in context that Sony purchased one of its main competitors - Toshiba's imaging sensor business, there is certainly a constrained set of alternatives.

But Nikon brought out their D800 (in Feb 2012) w. 36MP Sony sensor well before Sony issued their own 36MP sensor DSLR (A7R in Oct 2013).

Maybe Sony has changed its policy recently (eg so far there are no 42MP sensored cameras for non-Sony, despite it's 2015 introduction). But it hasn't always been that way.

The latest and greatest also cost more, more likely to have yield/quality issues and will benefit from process improvement over the course of manufacturing.

So it does make sense to keep the best from themselves, no one will be willing to take up the initial shock of the development cost anyway.

Just words.
Prooven technology vs. latest technology ...
Selling sensors to Nikon and Pentax, Sony will use different arguments, eh words.

Well, it's probably my lack of proper english language skills, but in the industrial environment I am working the phrase "outsourcing" has absolutely nothing to do with whom you sell to ...
Any idea in which language the original interview was done?

Well, if Imaging Resource removed the interview, this may be some indication that those Sony officials did not accurately represent the house policy, or Sony felt their words were misinterpreted.

Generally speaking, I don't find the news particularly worrying, given the skill Pentax engineers have shown in the past in tweaking existing sensors to amazing effect. As others have noted, the sensor itself is only one of fairly many factors determining the final imaging result.

Sony just felt the sting of the people they sell sensors to asking for deeper discounts on their "out of date "two year old" sensors. I'm sure the guys at Pentax and Nikon called them up and said "why are we paying so much for this antiquated crap."

The really funny thing about that, is Pentax invents Pixel Shift and gets more out of the old Sony sensor than Sony ever did.

But somehow, Pentax squeezes the best image out of the same 36MP Sony sensor that Sony A7R and Nikon D810 use.

You forgot the part where they threatened to purchase from Samsung.
