Pentax Pricing

Am I the only one here concerned about pricing on the most recent Pentax camera, the K-P?

I am still using my reliable K-r, but getting close to having resources for an upgrade. I think I'll go for a K-5lls when one comes available for $400, but just for reference I priced a K-P at Amazon, and came up with $1,055 for body only. I next checked prices for a decent Canon, and found the T7, with a kit lens, for $849. Yea, Yea, I know, it isn't a Pentax, and the Pentax has some very important advantages. But still, no one can argue that the Canon is not a pretty nice camera. I could probably find a decent used K-3 for $850, but would have to weigh a new Canon with factory warranty against a 3 or more year old used Pentax "as is", or with a very short 3rd party promise. If i did not already have a bag of Pentax equipment, tough decision.

I suppose the days of an entry level Pentax body for under $800 are gone, but still, it does leave the entry level market quite empty.

I thought the K-S2 was the entry body?

Canon, Nikon and Sony have found that the entry level and compact markets are disastrous, WSteffey. All are trying to pitch to the smaller sales, higher profits segments.

Pentax made that switch a little earlier.

Doesn't help you, of course, but I always think low-level cameras are like most musical instruments and exercise equipment. There are bargains to be had second hand, because someone got bored with their purchase.

Pentax K-S2 DSLR Camera (Body Only, Black) 11577 B&H Photo Video
^ K-S2 $499.

Pentax K-70 DSLR Camera (Body Only, Black) 16243 B&H Photo Video
^ K-70 $599

With the K-70 being only $100 more, I wouldn't even bother with the K-S2, but that's just my opinion.

Pentax K-3 II DSLR Camera (Body Only) 16160 B&H Photo Video
^ K-3II $849

For $250 more than the K-70, you can get a "pro" body with a battery grip to boot.

The next generation Pentax cameras are going to go up in price. I'm waiting for the K-3II replacement. I'm pretty sure that it's going to be priced priced higher than the KP.

I think the KS2 at $499 or the K70 at $599 would be considered the entry level.

I have a K-5IIs. It is a really nicely styled/featured camera, and the images it provides are excellent. I have a K-3II also.

I imagine the Kp will come down in price and a K-3 replacement will slot in at at about or little higher than the Kp's current price. If you want entry level, get a K-70 or a K-S2 as others have said. The current K-3 II offers good value too.

You'd want to compare the K-70 ($599 current, $699 launch) to that Canon. The KP is like a 80D, which is also $1099. The K-3 II's replacement will likely be priced closer to 7D II territory.

You think you have problems? How about us downunder (prices in AUD - about 30% more than USD, ~ = to CAD). The inconsistency is something else, nevermind the outdated models:

Yeah, probably not worth shedding tears over, Steve ... we're used to it, right?

A couple years back I got a K-50, and both 18-55 WR and 50-200 WR for 600 CAD which at the time was around 530 USD.

I am considering that route, and I am more than sure it will be a K3..I think that would be your most cost effective alternative, and if youre good with the KR( very good camera, we have the Pink, and its my go around camera), then the K3 would be the bang for the money..

I recently purchased a K3 with Da 18-135 lens and aftermarket grip all in mint condition on EBay. 8700 clicks on the camera. Lot of good used values out there if you shop around.

I feel like everyone just skips over the K70, and I don't get it. My recollection is it's image quality in tests here on PF had it on par or superior to the K3II, and it has better high ISO performance. The LCD screen swings out. It's not as fast on FPS, but not shabby at about 6, IIRC. It's WR. It's nicely built. I've got he K3II and my daughter has the K70. I steal her K70 now and again, and it's great. Lot of camera for the money. I'd keep it on the short list.
