AF questions: K10 + DA* zooms

To all DA*+K10D owners, do you all zoom in first then zoom out to get a focused shot with your K10? I own both the 16-50 and 50-135, and I have to zoom in and focus first to get a sharp wide shot on both lenses... when focusing at the wide end, it's always OOF.

I've no problem zooming in first for a shot; however, when in a rush, sometimes I lose a shot when I have to zoom in first then zoom out... I'm wondering if the DA*s AF perform better on the K20D? Or if I got unlucky and got two bad copies of the DA* zooms?

Hi, I'm using k10+50-135 a lot lately, and I didn't notice any real difference with focusing zoomed in or out, it's pretty precise. Only thing I've noticed with my copy of DA* is that it's pretty much on the soft side wide open and if focused 1-1,5m away, over 2m it's tack sharp. Then again, not always, so I guess it's me and my leaning forwards/backwards (afterall, it's only couple of mm of DoF at 135mm and f/2,8), since focusing tests using charts showed it's tack sharp and no FF/BF at any distance.

Sounds similar to the way my first DA 16-50 was focusing. Couldn't get it to focus correctly at infinity. Pentax replaced it for me.

Minimum distance focusing or not, with my 50-135, focus is soft when focusing at 50mm... however, when focusing at 135, then zooming out, focusing is tack sharp no matter the distance... I read in a similar thread that many copies of the 50-135 exhibit this weird focusing glitch...

As for the 16-50, infinity focus is no problem with my copy, only thing to consider is to focus at 50mm first before zooming out to 16mm... I'm wondering if this is normal with most copies (like with the 50-135), and if the problem is just common with the K10D...

Still sounds like my first 16-50. I noticed on group shots at say 16mm it was soft, then zoom to aprox.24 it would lock focus and the back off to 16 and it was OK. On group shots at say 10 -12 feet it would not focus sharply at 16mm. Things up close it would focus on without any problem. Unlucky me, I am noticing a similar problem with my new DA* 300mm. It focuses fine on close up subjects, but on say a deer at 40 feet it back focuses nearly every time. Pentax wants me to send camera and 300 to them to calibrate. It's almost as if the new DA lenses have a problem with infinity focus--go figure?
