K-7: My first DSLR

I have fond memories of my K-7. When I was looking for my first digital SLR, I was considering Canon and Nikon mainly. However, once I held and tried a K-7 in the camera store, I was sold. I really enjoyed the camera, but traded it in later for a K-5.

Here are several of my K-7 pictures:

Loving my K-7

I loved my K-7 so much I parted with $250 to replace the failed shutter assembly at only 23,000 clicks, figuring that would make the K-7 about like new. So far, so good, and now the K-7 is my Takumar lens camera with genuine Pentax adapter firmly in place!

Ah..the K7.

The last attempt by Pentax to source APS-C sensors from other than Sony.
Samsung screwed Pentax over like so many others!
The first Pentax dSLR to do video - albeit 720p

One of the only Pentax dSLRs that I actually sold.

Yes, the K-7 was a landmark camera. I bought mine used after having acquired a K20D, thanks to Mike Johnston's The Online Photographer, and then read reviews of the latest and greatest model. It was. The minute I had the K-7 in my hand I knew we were made for each other. So when the K-5 came out, I bought it without worrying about reviews once I knew it was the same idea, but better.

In the short time I had the K-7 I took a couple thousand photos, many of them for paying clients, and never regretted the purchase. Yes, the high ISO was a little ragged. By the end I was using the rough look for fine-art photos in my garden.

Still use a K-5 and a K-5IIs, and it's hard to imagine giving them up. Unless, say, they'd make a K-5III with the KP sensor.

I love the K-7. That was my first Pentax camera and made me a life-long convert to Pentax. So many features packed into a super high quality body.

Just started re-using mine after my K-50 gave up the ghost after only two years. I have a K-3 now but the K-7 remains my default B/W camera. No rush to get rid of it.....

K7 stuck in Manual

Help please. My K7 is some how stuck in Manual mode. I set it to AV which I normally shoot but it stays in Manual mode. What can I do?

Still Feeling the Love for the K-7

Just discovered this thread for the K-7, I was about to start a "Is there Any Love for the K-7" but I found this!

I already have a K-5 (my first digital Pentax), and my wife has/uses a K-3ii. I'm away on a weekly basis and I wanted something compatible just to keep in my suitcase without having to constantly swap stuff during the packing ritual. K-7 prices were under $200 so how could I resist? So when out and about in my travels, the K-7 is there when I need it and still performs admirably.

It's still a viable, relevant and reliable camera that soldiers on and provides excellent image quality!

Nice photos and I agree with you. I have the K-50 and K-3 now but still love my K-7. The image quality is very nice.

Something about the K-7... I was able to go back and retake these shots with a different set up years later but these are still some of my faves.

Loved my K-7 but daughter needed an SLR for a university course, Daddy wanted a better sensor, and kijiji contained an ad for a K-3 II that couldn't be passed up.

Bought new in 2009. Almost 9 years and going strong. Not that I don't get tempted to upgrade, but it's no slight against the K-7 that there have been improvements over the years. The improvements haven't been so mind blowing as to convince me to move on yet...

That is sad. I didn't know the background information you've provided.

I went from a K10D to the K-7, later adding a K20D as a second body (same sensor, I believe). I received a K-5 as a gift and sold the K20D, keeping the K-7 as a backup camera. When I bought a K-5 II, I converted the K-7 to infrared. Great camera for that purpose. Some sample images from the infrared-converted K-7:
