Nice to see another infraredder here!
That's incredible...

Okay Sidney Porter, you got me into this. Just received my cheapo 720nm filter tonight and took this test shot on my *ist DL. I tried the channel swap technique in post because that looked fun. Excited to try tomorrow when I have more light. I think my 720nm cheapo filter might be letting even more of the visible spectrum than advertised, but it's fun all the same. Only paid $6.

If you're using "Auto White Balance" the results can be "less dramatic", at least with my *ist 's. Try taking a manual white-balance reading, ideally from some green foliage or grass, but a "general view" will be better than nothing. Once the reading has been made, the camera will remember the settings until the next manual reading is made, even if switched off

Nice shooting and welcome!

This is an old one from 2014 that I've posted before - one of my faves for some reason. It was a hot summer day on Main Street in Grapevine TX. M28/3.5 on *ist D:
I really like this photo, color. I even looked to see if there is ISt * D on sale. This, as I understand it, is not processed JPG from a photo camera?

Yes, six blades

The photo is a processed jpg from the *ist D. I used digiKam (Linux) for processing. It's a photo editing software.

I did do that and it helped. Not sure how well I did it though, I just based it off the scene, but it looked much better than AUTO.

Here's another practice from today. Same red/blue channel swap, but this time messed with the hues to give the sky a more natural blue.

Still trying to figure out how to make the white/blue edit look better. The colors keep coming out very unpleasant. More learning

Hi! So nice to see you people taking the shot on infrareds! Iīve been playing around for couple of years, and maybe my experiences could be helpful.

So hereīs my 5 cents, a little step-by-step of my basic IR workflow.

My camera is a full range modified *istDL, meaning that the infrared hot mirror (the one in front of the sensor that blocks IR wavelengths) is removed to get normal shutterspeeds and not to have to deal with symptoms of old camera and long exposures.
Cool name, but actually lazyness since the hot mirror should be replaced with clear glass in order to keep correct autofocus or IR-pass filter to keep the AF and viewfinder. So mine has neither, i just manually focus on narrow aperture, composite and slab one of those cheap filters on my kit lens and hope results...

RAW, f/8 - f/16 and manual WB from the foliage or green grass is usually my way to go. In this example the filter is about 720nm, never so accurate with these cheap ones.
Rest is done behind the monitor, Darkroom and Gimp in my case. White balance metering from foliage, swap red and blue color channels and adjust exposure. Thatīs the base and then starts the tinkering!

Of course one the best aspects of IR is that there is no burden of "reality", so itīs good when it looks good and pretty wild colorisations are "allowed".

So, pretty much like this:
