Hi! So nice to see you people taking the shot on infrareds! Iīve been playing around for couple of years, and maybe my experiences could be helpful.
So hereīs my 5 cents, a little step-by-step of my basic IR workflow.
My camera is a full range modified *istDL, meaning that the infrared hot mirror (the one in front of the sensor that blocks IR wavelengths) is removed to get normal shutterspeeds and not to have to deal with symptoms of old camera and long exposures.
Cool name, but actually lazyness since the hot mirror should be replaced with clear glass in order to keep correct autofocus or IR-pass filter to keep the AF and viewfinder. So mine has neither, i just manually focus on narrow aperture, composite and slab one of those cheap filters on my kit lens and hope results...
RAW, f/8 - f/16 and manual WB from the foliage or green grass is usually my way to go. In this example the filter is about 720nm, never so accurate with these cheap ones.
Rest is done behind the monitor, Darkroom and Gimp in my case. White balance metering from foliage, swap red and blue color channels and adjust exposure. Thatīs the base and then starts the tinkering!
Of course one the best aspects of IR is that there is no burden of "reality", so itīs good when it looks good and pretty wild colorisations are "allowed".
So, pretty much like this:
