I have a *ist DS and it works, but drains the batteries too fast and overheats, regardless of ON/OFF switch position. I once took it apart and couldn't see anything wrong at first sight. There is a specific zone on the main board that overheats and can be felt through the body on the thumb rest. My temporary solution is as follows: I'm taking pictures and I feel it heating up. I turn it off, put it upside-down in the bag and open the battery door. That way batteries don't slide out and when I'm ready to take some more pictures, I just close the door, grab the camera and turn it back on. It is cumbersome, but at least I can still get some juice out of this great camera.

I recall there is a Bios update to correct the Battery false charge indicator.
If everything works just fine:
-If the camera looses the Datetime after removing the AA batteries, check the internal cmos battery.
-Check capacitor leaking becouse is the main clue for the warming;
-Rust or traces of acid from a battery leak could be another cause.

By the way... DS/DS2 is a keeper camera.
